I picked Season Two's Buffy... though I would never chose "Tortured" as a label for that Buffy. She was sad for some of the season (last few eps), but she was also overall the nicest of all the Buffies (other than Season Three). She also had the best character arc that Season and looked the best in this one (and season three).
In Season Six and part of Seven, I loathed the Buffy character. She wasn't deeper, she was just nastier.

And Buffy was by no means pure and perfect before Season six. She was plenty flawed. She always had a tendency to put her men over her friends, and over her duties as Slayer. Angelus reigned terror over Sunnydale for *months* before Buffy uttered the words "Now I'm ready." Buffy ditched her family and friends for an entire summer, went home, and was about to do it *again* simply because they were justly angry that she left in the first place. She was manipulative ("She Was Bad") and she was also easily manipulated (many times over in "Season Three"). There is simply nothing to back up the argument that Buffy was a pure character until Season Six. It's just that she wasn't a mean, petty, and nasty character until Season Six.

But at the same time, she didn't have reason to be any of those things... until Season 6.
Really, the only season where Buffy lost me a bit was Season 7, largely because her deliberate isolation and straight-man attitude were disproportionate to the threat we (the viewers) were seeing. (Compare that to Season 5, where she was also distant and "hard", but broke everyone's hearts, 'cause the reason for her behaviour was so relatable.)

You don't agree that Buffy was tormented back in Season 2 when Angelus had to be killed? Of course she was tormented then, but that was only a tiny bit of the season. She wasn't intent to kill Angelus until Becoming--the season finale. "Tormented" isn't an appropriate lable for the Buffy of Season Two, in my opinion, just as "Evil Witch" wouldn't be an appropriate lable for Willow in Season Six--it was only at the end of the season that each of these characters felt that way. Buffy, as a character, was at her deepest in Season Two. She was going through psychological issues (her dad's abandonment, her role as a slayer esp. in "Ted", and her obsession with Angel, accepting her destiny, etc). Tortured would be more appropriate for Season Six Buffy IMO.

She was tormented in Season 2 because she had to kill the only man she had ever been in love with. She was tormented in Season 2 when Faith turned her back against her and she had to split with Angel. She was tormented in Season 4 with the whole Parker thing and when she saw Riley suffer with the Initiative. She was tormented in Season 5 because she knew there was no way she could stop Glory from taking her sister away from her. She was tormented in Season 6 because being alive felt like living in hell. She was tormented in Season 7 because she had to lead a bunch of potentials to a huge battle during which many of them could die, including her. I just had to come up with something for S2 Buffy!
