But I'd be curious to hear other people's thoughts.... blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2008/07/21/horrible-is-as-horrible-does.aspxFor those of you who don't know Christopher Orr's work...I would suggest you make an effort to try to remedy that.... I for one semi-agree. While much of Whedon's brilliance comes from his ability to humanize fictional characters, his simultaneous willingness to kill off his living creations seems to run contrary to one of his greatest strengths.

Isn't this just what sets Joss apart from other Writers... he can kill of characters that people and himself love. Look at RTD on DrWho could he bring himself to kill Rose off... no. Could he killed Donna off no... how about.. no he couldn't. Charmed.. they killed Prue but really what other meaningful deaths did they have where they killed of a loved character...
This is what makes Joss who he is. I wouldn't change that.

Charmed.. they killed Prue but really what other meaningful deaths did they have where they killed of a loved character... Cole. Sort of, he appeared once after he "died". But he was kind of dead, in an eternal punishment sort of way. Don't forget about Andy, either. Everyone loved him and he was killed.

Charmed.. they killed Prue but really what other meaningful deaths did they have where they killed of a loved character... Prue can't really count, though. I mean, Shannen was leaving the show. Sure, they could have just had her 'leave and go somewhere' but that would have raised too many questions later on, as to what she was up to and stuff. Death was the more logical answer for her because it left no room for question. As for other writers that can kill off characters that are beloved though, (Despite not working in tv or anything) JK Rowling does it quite well. Dumbledore, Dobby, Fred, Tonks, Lupin, Sirius and so so many more.

I see it both ways. I loved that he was willing to kill Tara because it moved the story forward. Killing wash just seemed to be shock value and was to late in the movie to help any major plot development. However he never killed our favorite ship expert and she was one of the most innocent characters he had created

Killing off beloved characters is great if it helps to the story and character development ( like Jenny or Tara), but that whole redemption/finding-true-love and then dieing thing is totally becoming a Whedon cliche. As for Charmed they did kill Chris ( the big one), and how could they kill another sister. They would have to make their mom a very promiscuous woman, and have her date every possible magical creature to pull it off!
