I am currently watching Firefly for the first time and I have four episodes left. The episode "Ariel" completely hooked me and seemed to be the only episode that follows the larger story-arc thusfar. So that makes me wonder, when did Joss know that the show would be canceled? From the beginning? Or from when the episode "Ariel" was aired (I'm watching in the correct order...not the way it was shown originally).
Thanks for the responses.

The cast and crew had been hearing rumours about the cancelation for a while. It was a struggle to even get them to air the episodes in the right order and FOX did have trouble understanding the show. But it was officially canceled whilst they were filming "The Message". You've not seen this yet but at the end there is a perfect piece of music playing at the end and it works for a charatcer on the show but it is intended to be playing as a tribute to the show. They filmed 2 or 3 episodes after this and then that was it. The stupid network canceled the show, just because they didn't understand doesn't mean the fans did'nt. We loved it and our forever hatred towards FOX now makes us worry about every show now on that network. Sarah Connor Chronicles Bones Dollhouse They canceled Family Guy TWICE! Make sure you look out for "Serenity" it is the official movie continuation for the show, there is also various comics set in between the movie and the show. Hope this helps.

The Message was actually the last episode that was filmed. Joss changed up the order on the DVD to give the series a better ending. Yeah, FOX screwed up the show bad. I didn't watch Firefly when it was on the air (I regret it), but had I watched in the order that FOX aired it, I'd probably stop watching. So confusing.
