I've seen a few threads involving the X-Men, but have not seen one for Astonishing X-Men, by Joss himself. ^^ I, personally, think it is a legendary comic series. The art is AMAZING, as well. It has the best characters, IMO, and a great storyline. Also has a sad ending. Leave it to Joss. lol "Astonishing X-Men is the name of three X-Men comic books from Marvel Comics, the first two of which were limited series. The ongoing series began in 2004, its first run written by Joss Whedon with art by John Cassaday. It is currently written by Warren Ellis with art done by Simone Bianchi . It was a critical and commercial success, focusing on a roster consisting of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Shadowcat, Colossus, Beast and Wolverine." The ending of Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men is so sad. Kitty had to give her life to save earth, by phasing a giant bullet through it. Kitty has been my favorite X-Men for ever. Maybe that's why I like Buffy, Joss says Kitty inspired Buffy. Leave it to Joss to kill off my favorite character...Again...xD

I really enjoyed this series. I look for the HC editions every time I go to a book store/comic shop, but they are always sold out. This is the only Marvel series I've ever read too, as I usually stay away from the big super hero comics (besides Batman), and I thought it was fantastic. Just wish I could find the HC's!
And yes, the art is amazing. John Cassaday is a God.

Now I need to find the first HC.

Joss (and Grant Morrison) have greatly improved Emma's appeal to me. She grows on you.

Looks like there will be a new HC for these! It will be all of the issues by Joss in ONE BIG HARD COVER! Wooh! Too bad it's $75.00. :/
"ASTONISHING X-MEN BY JOSS WHEDON & JOHN CASSADAY OMNIBUS HC Written by JOSS WHEDON Art by JOHN CASSADAY & LAURA MARTIN Cover by JOHN CASSADAY & LAURA MARTIN Now in one titanic tome: the entire chart-topping run of super-team Joss Whedon and John Cassaday! Winner of multiple prestigious Eisner Awards, Whedon and Cassaday’s ASTONISHING X-MEN was a smash hit with critics and fans alike from the very first issue — winning praise from dozens of top media outlets including Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, TV Guide and New York Magazine, as well as racking up nearly every major comic-book industry award. Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Whedon and Cassaday (CAPTAIN AMERICA, Planetary) assembled a tight cast — Cyclops, the Beast, Wolverine and Emma Frost, joined by returning fan-favorite Kitty Pryde — and set forth a groundbreaking pace, from the opening pages of a Sentinel attack to the unexpected return of a beloved X-Man. Then, building on early momentum, they ratcheted up the danger and drama with a shocking second year, creating a must-read book that can truly be called “astonishing!” Packed with more than 40 pages of extras — including creator interviews, script pages, character designs and variant covers. Collecting ASTONISHING X-MEN #1-24 and GIANT-SIZE ASTONISHING X-MEN #1. 680 PGS./Rated T+ …$75.00 ISBN: 978-0-7851-3801-3"

I could never find the first HC in stores when I wanted to buy it. A complete HC sounds too good to pass up though.

I really liked this series when it began but my interest gradually waned due to the bad pacing and delays. That kind of decompressed storytelling works well in self-contained titles (like Buffy for instance, although that's nowhere near as slow as this) but when you have an entire shared universe around you, including a bunch of other X-Men titles featuring the same characters, you have to kind of pick up the pace and get on with the story. While Astonishing was twiddling it's thumbs with Danger and the Breakworld, the other X-Books were dealing with the fallout from House of M, which actually affected the Marvel Universe at large. Eventually, they got tired of waiting for Astonishing to catch up with continuity and just moved on without it, which is why Kitty's "death" was actually spoiled in another book before it actually happened. This was why I totally lost interest in the title... who cares about Breakworld when Messiah Complex is happening in the other titles? That said, this series did a lot right. The subtle characterization is really great (although I personally found Whedon's Wolverine a little shallow...), with Cyclops (my favourite X-Man) in particular benefiting from the strong writing. The art is also strong and well laid out. I wish someone could make an X-Men series that had the attention to detail that Astonishing had, but which actually came out on time and was a relevant part of continuity. Btw, this is a little off-topic but since this is an X-Men thread, my personal favourite team is the New X-Men, who actually appear in Astonishing a few times. Any more New X-Men fans out there?

Are you kidding, I love Skottie Young! The final arc was my favourite, partly because of his art and partly because Anole and Pixie had expanded roles. ;D

I think AXM kinda functioned as an alternate universe of the X-Men/Marvel universe. I read the entire "Messiah Complex" arc... bought them even, but was pretty much let down by the general feel of it. It was interesting, but since I'm not a Marvel fan, I was prepared to go with quality over the general direction that the X-Men universe was headed. As for the New X-Men, I've only read the Grant Morrison run which pretty much features the same team as AXM... and I mostly liked what I read. There were a few shoddy areas, but it was pretty good on the whole. I haven't read the "New X-Men" line-up you're referencing though, beyond what was featured in the "Messiah Complex" lineup. But back to AXM for a second, I'm actually a fan of what Whedon did with Wolverine; i.e. reducing him to a secondary character instead of letting him hog the limelight. I'm glad the other X-Men got to shine in this series, and I agree that Cyclops in general benefited from the strong writing, which was long due his turn, IMO.

Anyone interested in the motion comic of the first arc of the Whedon/Cassaday team-up? Newsarama has a trailer for it. CLICK to be astonished. Sorry, couldn't help the easy pun. It actually looks like there is some animation in this.

I just read the first three volumes of astonishing X-men and can't wait for more. It's my first major foray outside of the Jossverse by way of comics (in the sense that it's not a universe he created, I am aware however that he wrote them). A lot of the jokes are very Joss Whedon and definitely feeling the love for Kitty Pryde. Joss and the Whedonverse has opened my eyes to this whole new world and I'm loving slowing getting involved in it...of to read the rest of Astonishing X-men now.
