ATF is 17 issues (21 including Spike: ATF) whereas Season 8 is 40, so its about double the size. So 22 issues of Buffy is the equivalent of about #9 or so with ATF, by which a tonne of more interesting and actual *plot* had happened.
I'm bored of this whole "oh it'll matter later" stuff, I want it to matter NOW
Once again I was hoping for Twilight to feature a bit in this issue, but no. I mean I have to ask, *is* he the Big Bad of this season? Really? Because I can barely remember what he looks like he's featured so little
No Future For You was interesting but *really* didn't need to be four issues, it could easily have been done in three, or frankly two. Wolves at the gate also felt like a huge waste of time "Buffy and co go to Japan and fight some vampires. The end"
Yes there was other going on there, but I just feel the stories so far have all been such fluff. Where's the beef?!
Fluff is exactly the word I would use to describe Season 8. Fun and all, but fluff. Nothing has consequences.
Wow, I think that there's a lot being missed if people are thinking Season 8 is about fluff and the story being told is one of no consequences. Have you seen this recent quote from Joss?
"All of my stories lately involve massive corporations that are destroying the wills of the people who work for them."
There are absolute consequences being explored in Season 8. In fact, the entire season is an exploration of the consequences of Chosen and creating a world of slayers. As the Joss quote above shows, it's also exploring the consequences of the new status quo of a "race of slayers" and how leading them is compromising Buffy's free will. This is why we have scenes like Buffy robbing banks or her not jumping in to help victims (while Fray does) because she's wrapped up in the big picture. There's absolute consequences in Season 8. It's full of meaning and subtext and a deep exploration of themes.
