For years I’ve collected vintage and Japanese Barbie dolls, and when Sideshow Collectibles began manufacturing Barbie-size dolls of the AtS and BtVS characters, I bought those, too. I have loads of fun setting them up in ridiculous scenes with silly captions and posting the results in my Live Journal to share with my online friends. Unfortunately, Sideshow halted production of the Buffyverse dolls midway into the list of characters…so I was forced to make my own.
My homemade Fred didn’t require anything more than proper accessories: lab coat, glasses, miniskirt, etc. She was a Barbie doll whose long brown hair and cheerful expression were already Fred-perfect.
Here she's catching a ride with Sideshow Spike (whose Season 6 jacket and motorcycle were stolen from my Harley Ken.)
This is a “Before” shot of Barbie’s Friend Kayla in her original Mattel outfit:
And Kayla after I turned her into Illyria:
Sideshow eventually made beautifully-sculpted human and werewolf Oz dolls, but I needed some years before that to do a photo story. After much searching, I found a Bratz boyfriend doll who gave off a nice Oz vibe. He was a bit shorter than the Sideshow dolls, but that was okay because Oz was much shorter than the other characters, too.
I think my favorite customizing job is the copy I made of the little voodoo doll that Gunn finds in his office in the AtS season 5 episode "Just Rewards." I studied a screencap of that scene to get the doll’s size and decoration, and drew up a pattern from it. Happily, VoodooGunn is in good proportion with the 12-inch-tall Sideshow AtS-BtVS dolls and the 11-½ inch ones I made from Barbies. I’d love to know what became of the original from the show.
I’ve made several VDGs to give to friends, and normally I color the back as well as the front. On this one, though, I left the back blank, because it’s a dandy place to collect autographs of the BtVS-AtS actors and Mutant Enemy writers at conventions. (Note David Fury’s inscription on the back of VDG’s head: “Stick this and J. August will scream!”)
