I love Angel: After the Fall! It's hard to believe that I like it more than Buffy: Season 8. I just can not get into Season 8 for some odd reason. I just can't connect with any of the characters, and I can not get into the stories. But After the Fall I really got into. I vote for AtF all the way!

i've always preferred Buffy rather than Angel as a TV show, but even in the comics Buffy still beats it all for me
i find it easier to like most of the characters on Buffy, i guess

Angel: After the Fall is the best comic series I've ever read, but I love Season 8 to death as well. Season 8, along with Y: The Last Man are probably tied for my second favorite comic series.
And I have to move this to the Buffy and Angel forum/Poll's of the Verses since it deals with both Buffy and Angel (and not just AtF), and is a poll.

I love them both. Its just that Angel: After the Fall was a maxi series, and every issue was more epic. Buffy is is getting there, just taking a slow pace. Like a fifteen year old boy that hasn't started puberty. Just developing slowly. (And that was not a reference to me!)

Buffy had me until Dark Willow came back. I haven't bought an issue since.
ATF, on the other had, delivered after EVERY issue.

I chose both, couldn't pick one. I love them both for different reasons. After the Fall for the majorly epic, linear story with some fantastic surprises and Season 8 for the overall arc and character development

Well, I've only read the first three issues of After the Fall (and I was in a bit of a hurry, since I was in Barnes & Noble and they only had the super-expensive hardcover), and I wasn't all that impressed. Even though I do like season 8, I'm not as big a fan of it as some and I sort of feel like it's getting progressively worse, but I still like it more than what I've read of ATF.
I'll hold off on voting until I've caught up with both series, but right now, my vote lies with Buffy season 8.

I always prefered Ats, I do prefer the characters and the feeling of that series. So ATF already has that advantage.
I enjoy season 8, but it feels like it's not part of the 'verse to me. It's like Ats season 5, a whole new setting and some big changes in the cast and feeling of the show. I don't really like it, I prefer the dark and small world. I like Angel or Buffy staking a vamp more than seeing them fight epic monsters with jets and big guns. Ats season 5 was never a favourite of mine, and I have the same vibe with season 8.
And maybe I'm just a bad comic reader, but I don't like it that we are already busy for 2 years and there are no big answers yet, only questions and unfinished plotlines. I want something to happen or a real good character study. Which is what ATF delivered, when it would be on tv ... season 8 would probably be a better season. But in comic form, I prefer ATF.
The only weak spots for me are the First Night stories, I wanted to know so badly how Gunn became a vampire and why Connor returned. But after five issues of ATF I wanted to go on with the story and was seriously annoyed by the pause. But after that, it picked up the story perfectly. And after issue #15 I was afraid that ATF was too sensational and shocking but the last two issues finished the story in a beautiful way. ATF was the perfect finish of the Ats season 5 arc with them working for W&H. Angel is back where he belongs and we'll see who will join him.
But my opinion of season 8 is really going to depend on the payoff, BtVS season 2 (my favourite season) had also a slow start. I'll see if they can statisfy me by answering all their questions and finishing all the plots they started. I think that the key lays in two answers; 1. How is Buffy going to pay for her mistakes and 2. Who is Twilight? So maybe I'll look back in 1.5 years and say that season 8 is the better one. But right now ATF wins easily.
Only one thing. I did read Vampmogs (Buffyforums) review of ATF issue 17 today and he wrote about the two beautiful lines in that issue. And all I can do is agree with him.
"A man isn't measured by the mistakes he's made, he's measured by what he does about them."
&
"But for now I'm here to help."
Brian Lynch gave us two beautiful and epic lines. Lines that will be quoted and especially the first is a beautiful lesson. Not one line in season 8 could touch me like those two lines did or the line about Connor being the love of his life. I'm a person who is in love with lines, good speeches and philosophies.

S8 all the way. I'm not saying that I don't like ATF but S8 just makes me more exited for more reasons:
- It is divided into colorful arcs. - Its more epic - Old characters that return have a place in the story ( unlike Nina who was just a background figure) - It doesn't resurrect much ( like ATF in issue #17, I hate it when writers do that, it makes death so meaningless ) - It brings fresh new characters and villains - It seems mapped out, unlike ATF - they seem to be writing it as they go along.

I voted for BTVS:S8 but only by a thread. I just can't seem to connect with S8 like I was able to with the show. It seems short(I know it has to be bc of the book size) and distant. It just lacks the intensity and flavor that I'm used to with the show. I still read it, and will continue to do so, but I feel like it's not the same thing. A lot of the one-shots aren't as good as the one-shot episodes, and I've really only truly enjoyed one arc (NFFY). I hope it will get a little better when the Oz arc begins, and we find out who Twilight is.
I've only read a bit of A:ATF but I'm not in love with it. I feel like it's on the seat of your pants with some stories, but I'm trying to get into it. I read the Spike:ATF due to my immense love for him, and I felt it was a bit hard to get into as well. I think the BTVS is more aesthetically pleasing for me, I feel that the characters look more like themselves, and that's a big make-or-break for me.

I prefer Buffy a little. Angel is a fine comic on it's own, but I feel that it doesn't really mesh with the TV series well. They're really on two very different scopes. The same is true of Buffy, I guess, but to a much less noticable extent. I loves 'em both, of course.

Angel all the way. Buffy has been nothing but a dissapointment. For something that is written by the man who created the characters...it comes off as bad fan fiction. Really bad fan fiction. I read it for a year. I stuck with it as long as I could....but couldn't waste my money anymore.
Sure AtF has had it's faults...nothings perfect:)...but it is so true to the spirit of the show, to the characters, and to the principles that Angel stand for...more than I could ask for.

^ I think ATF being written by a (talented) fan has actually been quite beneficial, because Lynch has strived to recreate the Angel feel within the comic medium. Because Joss is boss, he was free to do whatever he wanted with his baby in season 8 and it's gone off the rails slightly. I'm sure it'll come together quite nicely in the end, with more time to plan and avoid gaping plot stupidity like season 7, and more time to set up and pay off arcs than ATF; but there is a lot of unnecessary wierdness in season 8 that probably put a lot of fans off. I think both comics are doing what they should. Buffy wrapped up on telly so there's a jump back into a story that is both jarring and freeing. There's a clean slate to build anything on, but obviously everything needs to be built. The new season takes the time to establish everything and develop form there. In a monthly comic it's a slow process but the whole story becomes more and more enriched with each release. After the Fall was an entirely different beast. The Angel seires ended on a different note, and the continuation picks up on the immediate plot threads left behind. This story serves to wrap up the events implied by the final moments hinted at in the last moments of the show.

S8. It was dead-even thru the first 5 issues of AtF, but I didn't care much for "First Night" (other than Wes's and Gunn's stories), and was never able to re-capture that same level of excitement I had for it once the main story resumed in #9. The change in the art team (that completely changed the look of the series) really threw me, and was probably the biggest mistake made in either series (so far)...

It's really hard for me to pick one but I'm going to go with Season 8. The quality for Season 8 has been top notch. While I don't think every story has knocked it out of the park, the artistry and coloring involved for Season 8 has been so amazing. If Franco had stayed on for the whole run of After the Fall I don't think I would have been able to pick one over the other. I really didn't like the guest artists who stepped in his absence. Issues 9, 10, and especially 11 looked rushed. That's a shame because Lynch's writing was really strong during those issues. I think the story deserved better.

I enjoy both equally. I can stand the fact that there are being told in different ways, but I think I slightly prefer AFTER THE FALL's storytelling better.
