Phil made a comment that I wanted to reply to but I didn't want to hi-jack the Spuffy thread....
If I had to pick a character that had the potential to outshine Angel, if would be Wesley. He was such a dynamic character. He came a long way from his early days on Buffy. Bumbling idiot to the force to be reckoned with. I really grew to love Wes.

Like I said in the other thread...at times everyone outshined Angel! Specifically Spike, Cordy, Wes and Fred. Illyria.
I just find myself being bored with his character, in re-watching the series. I just think I personally have had enough with the whole soul business. There is only so much of the tortured non-happy I can take these days. He wouldn't be Angel without the curse. Just an uncommonly cunning and smart, evil vampire. Angelus would never seek out his soul. Ever. But I still love him through and through!

In rewatching the series over and over I've never grown tired of Angel. I've always enjoyed his character a lot.

I loved Angel, but he broke my heart.
But even when I loved him, I had started to grow tired of him. I guess that's partly because I wanted to see more of the other characters, but since he was the lead...
Also, the snappy comeback after snappy comeback-deal was getting old. With Buffy too.
EDIT- Dammit, I broke my ban again. I'm not coming back for two days. Not even to check my PMs!

I never really liked Angel. Most main characters outshine him for me.

I don't think any characters are really outshined that i can think of. They all get their time in the spotlight, and less if they are less important. From a story perspective, though, many characters certainly felt outshined at times..xander and dawn most notably. Maybe i am just misunderstanding.

ANGEL SEASON 3 SPOLIERS
Wesley outshined the sun in season 3 of Angel. He took that season and kicked it's ass. Good Wes, confused and trying to do the right thing and ends up losing everything and everyone he loves. Come on thats goof TV right there and the episode where he gets his throat cut by Justine and Connor is sucked into hell...one of my fav episodes.

I'm bias because I love the character of Angel, so he could never be boring to me. I thought his story, from Buffy to Angel and in the comics, was/is always intriguing.
As for people who could outshine the main characters of each show, I'd say Lilah on Angel because she had such a presence on screen and Giles on Buffy because his acting was always incredible.

Man I just love Giles on Buffy. I love it that these shows were kind of group effort. Although Buffy and Angel are the leads, there is plenty of room for all the characters to shine.
Do agree about Wes though, he was/is awesome.

Angel was really the reason why I fell in love with Buffy in the first place, so he has a very special place in my heart. Although I also really love Spike and Wesley.

I believe every character got to outshine Angel in their own way. Everyone has their own pathway and destiny to fulfill. You know? Not that Angel didn't shine, he did. He shined so bright my eyes hurt. Please let me know if I'm not making sense. Kay?

Every time I watch The Trial, I fall for Angel. He fought so hard for Darla, her health being denied in the end, just to see her vamped again.

Angel is a interesting character, but there are a handful of more interesting characters! Illyria, Lorne, Spike, Anya, ect!

The thing I love about Joss's shows (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and hopefully Dollhouse as well), and what makes them so different than other shows on TV, is that his characters progress. They do not stay the same. They are not simply one-note, one-dimensional characters that we see so often in television. Joss allows for his characters to grow, expand, and develop, much as any person would in real life. And this is why, despite the fantasy/supernatural element inherent in his shows, they have about them a certain amount of realism, perhaps more so than anything else on TV. Joss's shows are the mirrors that reflect real life, the world we live in, and the problems we face. If you're wondering why I'm going off an a tangent, the reason is this; even in the short lived Firefly and the first season of Dollhouse, we were able to already witness great change unfolding for the main protagonists. In the beginning of Firefly, Mal was portrayed as a hard-nosed captain, but as the series continued we realized that there was more under the surface. So, too, with Echo. We already know that there's so much more to her character than just the mindless, brainless active. My point is, every character has had their chance to shine. I think that is part of creating shows centered around an ensemble cast. Every character gets their time in the spotlight, not just the main ones. I do agree about Wesley, though. He definitely experienced a lot of character growth over the years and it was amazing to watch his journey. Beginning as the fumbling watcher on Buffy and ending as a bad ass fighter who proved that he was more than capable of taking care of himself. Wow, what a journey! Go Wesley.

Twangel glows now! Nobody can outshine him now, not even the sparkly one. Mission accomplished Joss.

All characters had moments where they outshined Angel. Xander outshined Angel in Prophecy Girl -personally, Xander is always shining on my screen.

Don't get me wrong I like Angel, but I have to admit I liked Spike, Cordy, Wes, Fred, Darla and even maybe even Connor a little more than him. I think they all outshine him. I don't want to say Angel was one-dimensional, but I think he was the closest to it out of all the characters. There's only so much brooding you can take. I still love the big guy though.

Lorne and Spike both outshone Angel in every scene, just for their confidence and originality
