The good; Sex raises it's ugly head in the Buffyverse and it's all the better for it. A lovely little bit between Buffy and her teacher (who is also in The Witch) and although a minor character you feel the loss for both Buffy and Giles (we know Buffy is a bright girl when she applies herself and here it's made clear that she's not just some blonde airhead). Angel's back although compared to what Buffy faces later this vamp is small change, he seems to talk it up rather unnecessarily, maybe it's just an excuse to see Buffy again. Some lovely humour around Xander and his teenage lust, especially love his Bronze fantasy.
The bad; Really the She-Mantis itself, when you compare it to some of the monsters from the later seasons it really does look awful. This ep is really a filler ep, very much 'monster of the week', it's fun but if Buffy had kept up this sort of ep it would never have become the great series it is
Best line; Xander (looking at Miss French's cleavage) "It's a beautiful chest...I mean dress"
Questions and observations; Giles shows interest in a woman for the first time, if he hadn't I must say I thought he might be gay? Flutie takes everyone to see the counsellor, is that the same one Buffy goes to see in 'Beauty and the Beast'? In 'Doomed' Willow says she's always the one to find the bodies but actually it seems more often to be Cordy. The Sunnydale Police are also hunting the claw handed vamp, the last time they do anything useful in the history of the series. Maybe that vamp was an enemy of the Mayor's? This story is an interesting reversal of fictional norms, how often do you see the heroine racing to save the boys from losing their virginity to the villain and not the other way around? What happens the eggs? Presumably Buffy and co deal?
3/5 I think but that may be a little generous

I'm a sucker for S1, and I love this episode. Probably because it is Xander-centric.
I love that the boys who brag about how many times they've "done it" are really virgins. I love that the first thing Buffy uses against the giant monster praying mantis is two cans of insect repellent. I love that Giles is constantly doubting Buffy's guesses, and then when she's right he usually slams his hand on the desk/table and shouts "Of course!"
Most of all I just love the typical Buffy ending of "oh no! eggs in the closet!!" And then we never deal with that again haha, thanks a lot Joss!!
I give it 4/5

You know-I think this episode makes Xander the first Scooby to have a disaestrerous relationship-Buffy doesn't really have one with Angel yet. He should probably get a trophy or something ;D
Best wishes,
Scott

Well Buffy's boyfriend in the movie dumps her on Prom night and then has sex in his car with one of her best friends? Another thing this ep highlights is the double standard applied to men and women. Xander and co lust after the beautiful teacher and it's funny+every schoolboys dream (as is Buffy seducing RJ in season 7). But just imagine that it was Giles luring Buffy and Willow back to his flat and plying them with martinis. Would we all be scandalized?

There's a line cut from "First Date" when Xander asks Lissa/Lyssa: “Did you hatch out of a preying mantis egg in the old high school?” I always just kind of kept that connection in my head.

Unfortunately, the line was cut, so you won't hear it when you watch "First Date." I really wish that they had kept it in, though....it really would have leant itself to the "back to the beginning" theme of season seven.

Damn it Joss, bring out Special Edition Buffy DVDs with lines like that restored! I would especially like to see the rumoured scene at the beginning of season 7 where Dawn imagines introducing herself to her class by telling them her real life story.

Good point about the double standard.... Best wishes, Scott

I should also be a bit more generous to the SDPD, that cop does save Xander outside the Bronze in The Zeppo

She is mighty fine and indeed pretty similar to Jenny?

Oh Jenny is way hotter than Ms. French! I don't know why but for some reason I just never found her (Ms. French) attractive at all. Maybe it's the predator vibe....I'm a sucker for vulnerability in a person.
Here is where Xander and Willow first lay eyes on Angel, and Xander takes an instant, indelible dislike to him. I love Xander to pieces, but one of his biggest faults, imho, is his tendency to snap to a judgement and then stubbornly cling to it forever after.
That's a very good point, saturn, about what if the roles were reversed. I've always thought Ms. French's seduction of Xander was all kinds of creepy, but if the shoe were on the other foot, and it was a male teacher seducing one of the girls? I think more people would be more grossed out.
The show is still obviously finding it's footing at this point. It's a little clumsy with it's red herring, and Angel still doesn't seem to have much of a point except for being all cryptic and taking off his jacket to make Buffy's heart go pitter-pat. (But, hey! Jacketless Angel!) And really, giant bug lady?
I came late to the Buffy party, starting with the dvd's right about the time season 7 was on the air. And the first time I saw this episode, it made me look slantways at my fanatical friends and go "Really guys? Seriously?" But I was already in it for the characters, and now it's that very cheese factor that I love so much about this episode.

Teachers pet it's funny lines. The scene at the end when Giles tell Bufy wrong side and she has to flip the tape over is funny. WHat's funny is a saw a show on older woman who find young men seduce them get pregnant and then the boy is attached to them for life. Maybe this show is a metaphor for that. Some are even teachers who do it for fun or to have the guys kill their husbands.

Good point, this is the first time Xander and Willow meet Angel. As for Miss French she's one of Kenneth Brannagh's Mistresses in Wild Wild West, one of the sirens in 'O Brother where art thou' but best of all Athena's girlfriend on Xena

Oh Jenny is way hotter than Ms. French! I don't know why but for some reason I just never found her (Ms. French) attractive at all. Well, she's clearly quite attractive. But I, too, find myself more attracted to Jenny. "Ms. French" is too plastic. For this episode, that look serves its purpose but I'm glad we got Robia for the longer haul.
