The Good; Awesome fight scenes with both The Three and at the Bronze. Lovely stuff with Buffy introducing Angel to Joyce, wonderful scene between Angel and Darla hinting at great things to come. I love Joyce's denial over the barbecue fork and Cordy's rage over the girl in the same dress. The big shock that Angel is a vampire which I must say I didn't see coming at all (he gives Buffy a cross in WTTH but it's in a box!). Love the diary misunderstanding too and the shock of Buffy coming home to see a bleeding Joyce in Angel's arms.
The Bad; The Master's killing of The Three (lame name or what?) is stupid. Also they seem to give up awfully easily, that or Joyce just walks right past them? (maybe they know better than to mess with momma Summers?)
Best line; Buffy "Stay the hell away from us!"
Observations and questions; Anyone else disturbed by The Master's relationship with The Anointed? Joyce is the first cast member to be bitten by a vamp (although despite being a huge part of the series she's never actually a Scooby) whilst Angel is the first to be shot. Why don't vamps use guns more often? According to Joss it goes against their demonic nature. We have Xander dancing, always a treat. Angel kills his first vamp onscreen although we later learn he's killed at least 2 prior to this. The first of the many deaths of Darla
Here Buffy really kicks into high gear, the Buffy/Angel romance is set on it's course, we see the Darla/Angel relationship for the first time, it turns an OK show with an attractive cast into a brilliant show 5/5

Overall: A
Good: The darker feel to the episode. It really showed the inner turmoil of Angel and how he scrambles for whatever thread of sanity is near when it comes to loving Buffy. This was what really set the whole Buffy and Angel true love thing on its course. It showed that the show was capable of doing things that were more adult and more complex that just simply doing monster of the week episodes. I felt that the scene where Buffy finds Angel with her mother is also very powerful. She throws him through that poor front window but doesnt stake him then and there because of the fact that she loves him and because of her duty to her mother. The last scene was beautiful with Buffys cross that Angel gave her burning into his chest. I think that was supposed to represent their love. And another thing that I always like to stress about this series, is that it doesnt matter how dark an episode can be, it always is able to pull off large amounts of humor as well. XANDER!
Bad: Just watching vampires dust in Season 1 annoys the hell out of me. And another thing that aggravates me watching this episode NOW, is how easily Darla was dispatched yet she lasted a hell of a long time on Angel.

And another thing that aggravates me watching this episode NOW, is how easily Darla was dispatched yet she lasted a hell of a long time on Angel. Seriously!! In AtS they make such a HUGE deal out of Darla, and it never made sense to me after her oh-so-forgettable time on BtVS. And she's kinda annoying on Buffy, whereas on Angel..well, still annoying, but at least she doesn't have horrible lines on Angel. I always find it odd that at the end of this ep when Angel and Buffy are talking and kissing, etc, Buffy is almost the same height as Angel, when we all know that SMG is a tiny tiny person and David Boreanaz is a tall tall person. Ah, the magic of TV!! LOVE: Buffy and Giles sparring>>Giles on the floor in seconds..Angel and Buffy awkwardly having their first kiss>>Angel vamping out..Joyce "The teachers really *DO* care in this town!" in response to Giles' concern for Buffy..The Bronze: Pre- AND Post-Fumigation parties>>never a lame enough reason to dance HATE: Darla's gun show..The Three being built up to be badass, only to be staked in the back by Darla>>huwhat? After reviewing my tally, I seem to have enjoyed more of this episode than I disliked it. So I'll give it 7.5/10

If you notice in any of the still pictures of the cast, SMG is always in heels, AH is always in flat shoes and CC is always on the other side of the picture. By season 7 they'd just given up and made a joke of even Dawn being taller than than Buffy (love the scene in 'Gone' where Buffy has to jump up to see over the crowd outside the museum). Always wondered why they never did a height joke when Buffy and Faith swapped bodies.
Yeah, Darla is so powerful on Angel but not on Buffy. But remember Angel was no great fighter until he got his own show, I think Hellmouthcentral did a count of all the characters kills and Angel kills more vamps in the first ep of his own series than he does in three seasons of Buffy. Jane Espenson makes the point in 'What's my line?' that Angel is hugely strong one week but can't break a bicycle lock the next

The best episode to show up so far! Angel really got the show going! This showed how great buffy could be. It helped launch the future Angel show as well. A great hour of tv.

Well, a great 41 minutes of TV but yes you're totally right, it's their romance that really put the hook in the audience

I just hated the sound of the guns. Eek. So cheesy.

I think Darla should have had a larger role in "Buffy". There's just something about the woman's voice that plays her. It's sexy. I actually thought the gun shots were cool. I think it made Darla's character more memorable that she was using guns.

I really liked that Darla used guns in this episode, I thought it was an interesting change. -The Three were lame. Super lame. Why didn't they still wait for Buffy/come after her? It was lame that Darla killed them too. -I really liked the backstory into Angel, how they tried to make him bad, but then he came out to be good in the end. -Buffy sucks at fighting, but it's a nice flashback to see her learning everything. -I love the intro with Giles's "She is the Slayer..." -All Buffy really says is "Come on'' to Angel when her and Angel are running into her house...is this enough for an invitation? -Oh Joyce, I love you. -Buffy beating up Giles with the big stick. Awesome. -I wish Darla would've been around a little more in Buffy, but I love that she was brought back in Angel. -If Joyce's iron was a little low, then they would've given her a transfusion, not an iron pill. Something I noticed. -I love Buffy getting her crossbow ready. -Overall, awesome ep. I think it was the first good one of the 1st Season. I loved it and it was my favorite.
9.5/10
-Fave quotes: -"What's it like where you are?"-I use this one all the time still -"I don't know what everyone's talking about, that outfit doesn't make you look like a hooker"
