Thread for peoples opinions on the new Sam mendes (amercian beauty - road to perdition) film.
Personally I thought it was bloody INCREDIBLE!!
I have an obsession with horribly depressing films and this certainly satisfied every film-loving bone in my body.
thought it was fantastic and the performances from leo and kate were beyond immense.
anyone who mentions 'is this like titantic 2?' though I will find you and slap you...hard.
Im a firm believer in that marriage and typical surburban life is a pretty empty aim in life and couldnt think anything worse for myself, which is probably backed up by a pretty crappy relationship between my parents so this type of film that shows a break down of said relationship I find incredibly fascinating and really enjoy it. So yeh, the film helped to back up my original views on marriage, mwahaha.
I did find the lack of the children in the plot sort of odd but then again the main focus was on the couple. Some of the fights between the two of them were pretty brutal and I loved every viciously screamed line of them.
Kate winslets outburst towards de'caprio I found particularly memorable with the whole ' I just realized I hate you' speech etc, and his tear-filled angry outburst to her statements, with her backing away in fear as he fights the temptation to smack her. (which I realllly dont blame him for quite frankly.lol)
I really enjoyed the whole change of perspective also, with the woman being the more emotionally closeted character and the husband being the one trying to open up and discuss their 'feelings'. It was a nice departure from the male always being the harsh insensitive person who is emotional stunted.
The end was pretty shocking but at the same time not unexpected.
All in all, DEFINATELY one of my favourite films, and for 2009 has totally beaten out Slumdog Millionaire.
Next week ill be seeing The Wrestler however so I will see how that fares in relation to this film.
overall a complete depressing break down of a seemingly successful married couple. And I fucking loved every second of it.
10/10.
