Were the Shadowmen "pro-women"? Were they wrong in creating the Slayer, and subsiquent line of chosen? I think what they did has ended up saving countless lives in history. Sure, they violated a girl and many women have lived short lives too, but I think the good done outweighs the bad here.
I believe a young woman was their choice, not because they felt women inferior, but because they felt a young woman was the perfect "BAIT" to lure Vampires. Vampires would see her as easy prey, be drawn to her - and then she would Slay them. I do not think this is a case of Man subverting Woman - in fact they were GIVING her power.
What do you think on this?

from a gal's point of view, being raped by demon essence isn't exactly "giving", but it was definitely not done to subordinate women. unless you look at the fact that it was only one, rather than all potientals having the power. they tried to stop buffy from seeing that it could be all. they were afraid of women having power, but realized that one having power enough to save their bums would be an asset. dunno...just my take. they always just creeped me out really.

True true. But when you look at it that way, Willow must be 1,000 times worse! She and Buffy forced the power on thousands of girls world-wide who might not have wanted the power too. I'm sure many Potentials didn't want the power just as much as the First Slayer. Wow, I never thought about that before...maybe this can be addressed in the comic as well.

What was bad about the shadowmen is that I read somewhere the reason they chose a young girl was because she would be easier to control than an adult would, more easily manipulated.

I guess they just did what they had to do...
But if they thought a young girl would be more easily manipulated, they got that wrong!!!!

Where did it say that they picked a girl cause she was easy to control? Not trying to pick a fight at all, but I am curious cause I'd like to see/read up on that.
I think a true "Origin of the Slayer" story would be cool! I'd love to know more about Sineya. Like what her life was like before the spell, who she was....and more over, WHY they chose her over any other girl...
I wonder if she was a daughter of one of the Shadowmen? That would be interesting!!

Yeah, buffy and willow did force the power on the girls, but their power was already there, hence them being potentials. the power was just 'activated'. For the original slayer, she had demon essence forced into her in a not so pleasant way. i always hate that scene. But for the potentials, the power was already there, just awakened. So they may not want it, but it was not as invasive as the original. jmo!! i would love to hear Joss' thoughts on it too! that would make a great comic.....he started to get into it, but only gave us a little...enough for the story line. who wouldve guessed us obsessed fans would want the whole story! *sarcasm* hehehe

So wait... the power in the potentials was activated... does that mean they all had a little demon essence in them all along?
Is 'sineya' the name of the first slayer? Where did you get that bit of information?
