I love Anya but there seems to me to be some inconsistencies with her character. When she was first introduced in "The Wish". She seemed to be very smooth when pretending to be a high school student and part of Harmony's little group. She knew how to talk and interact with people very confidently and smoothly. Toward the end of season 3 and definitly season 4 is when we get to see Anya for some reason forget simple social ettiqette. It just seemed odd. Then in the flashblack Anya episode when we see her pre-vengence demon she has that awkward behavor and it's written like she was always that way when she clearly wasn't. Thoughts?

I guess in s3 she was pretending to be someone she wasn't to get cordy to trust her and make a wish. But after spending time with the gang she felt more comfortable acting like her true self, ie someone who speaks their mind, and she was more comfortable talking about her demon past too. Its like in triangle when willow said anya should learn the rules, and anya replied 'the rules are stupid', its not that she doesn't know how to act normally, its just that she doesn't want to. People used to act and talk very differently in the past, and certainly a thousand years as a demon would have influenced her behaviour too, and that's what has shaped anyas behaviour today. Then again, judging from how she acts in the selfless flashbacks... maybe she's just weird.

Anya and everything about her was just spontaneous sillyness. I'm amazed she managed to pay for an apartment through all of season 4 without any kind of job.

I think maybe she had actually studied some to before going into the High School scene to find some vengeance-seeking girls. And if that's true, after a short period of time, she'd either have to keep repeating everything she'd leanred and already said or just let go of it and start over.
Does that make sense?
