For every season of Buffy and Angel, pick two characters who you feel got the best story arc and you liked the most; and if you feel it's necessary, a character who was badly handled for each too.

Mine would look something like this...

Buffy:

Season 1 - Buffy, Angel
Season 2 - Buffy, Willow
Season 3 - Cordelia, Giles
Season 4 - Oz, Willow
Season 5 - Spike, Xander
Season 6 - Giles, Tara (Didn't like Xander too much this season. He seemed to have regressed from the confident man he had become in season 5)
Season 7 - Anya, Spike (Buffy is really uneven in this series I think. I get what they were doing but she came off unfeeling too often, and I felt there was a piece missing where the clear change in Buffy in the last two episodes weren't really acknowledged. She's suddenly accepted back into the group for no reason.)

Angel:

Season 1 - Doyle, Angel
Season 2 - Lindsay, Darla
Season 3 - Wesley, Angel
Season 4 - Connor, Lilah (Cordelia was fooked over this season. End of)
Season 5 - Gunn, Angel

This is hard. I don't really hate any characters so this will be very difficult.

Buffy:

Season 1- Buffy, Xander
Season 2- Buffy, Cordelia
Season 3- Willow, Faith
Season 4- Giles, Spike (I thought that chipped-Spike and mid-life crisis Giles were two of the funniest things of the season. It was great seeing these two things play out)
Season 5- Buffy, Anya
Season 6- Willow, Tara
Season 7- Buffy, Anya (I loved seeing Buffy take charge)

Angel:

Season 1- Angel, Cordelia
Season 2- Kate, Darla (Kate was only in 6 episodes in Season 2, but I feel like she had the biggest story in the season. It was intense)
Season 3- Angel, Lilah
Season 4- Wesley, Lilah
Season 5- Harmony, Fred/Illyria (Harmony will always be one of the most underrated characters in the Buffyverse, and she's one of my personal favorites. Even though she didn't really do a lot in this season, I liked seeing her sort of becoming part of the gang, until the end)

Season 2- Angel, Xander
Season 3- Willow, Faith
Season 4- Giles, Buffy
Season 5- Buffy and Dawn
Season 6- Willow, Tara
Season 7- Buffy, Anya

Its hard to chose only two they each had a lot of different great story lines in each season.

Buffy:

Season 1 - Buffy, Angel
Season 2 - Buffy, Willow
Season 3 - Angel, Willow
Season 4 - Oz, Spike
Season 5 - Spike, willow, tara (had to have the two together)
Season 6 - Willow, Spike, Buffy
Season 7 - Really, everyone. So much happened and so much changed. Dawn kinda grew up a little, Spike's soul, Anya staying and fighting, Xander grows up, Giles and Buffy fight for the lead, Faith returns all "good", Andrew switches sides (i love andrew!). Buffy has to lead when no one wants her to...but hello, kept them alive and saved the world for 7 years! A little respect! The only ones I really don't like here is Wood, Faith irks me, and I couldn't stand most of the potentials (loved Vi of course!!)

Angel:

Season 1 - Doyle, Angel
Season 2 - Lindsay, Darla
Season 3 - Wesley, Angel, Fred
Season 4 - Connor, Wesley, (Cordelia fooked herself over by getting pregnant against her contract--messed up Joss' plans for Season 4.)
Season 5 - Spike, Fred/Illyria

Oh, this is hard, they all change in each season, I think... Well, I'm actually a new Buffy fan, and only recently watched Season 7 of Buffy. I haven't started Angel yet, so I won't be able to do any of them. Here's what I think in Buffy, though:

Season 1 - Buffy, Angel
Season 2 - Willow, Cordelia
Season 3 - Giles, Angel
Season 4 - Spike, Oz
Season 5 - Spike, Anya
Season 6 - Buffy, Spike
Season 7 - I agree with Spikeluv, here! Quite a lot happened and changed. I think I can narrow it down to three, though: Spike, Anya, Buffy.

Season 2- Angelus, Drusilla, Spike, Kendra (she really shouldn't have died, yo).
Season 3- Buffy, Faith
Season 4- Giles (I agree with hitnrun017, the mid-life crisis story was hilarious), Buffy, Anya
Season 5- Buffy, Glory
Season 6- Dawn (I had a klepto problem as a kid, so I related to seeing it explored on television), Tara
Season 7- Spike, Buffy, Kennedy (don't hurt me)

And haven't got around to watching the Angel series yet.

But what else could I expect from a bunch of low-rent, no-account hoodlums like you? I first put those I just enjoyed in the season and then realized we were talking who had the best arcs. A lot of my favourite arcs on the series weren't exactly the happiest, nor did it view the characters in the greatest lights (Oz in Season 4, Riley in Season 5, Giles in Season 7), but they were to me the most engrossing to watch.

Buffy

Season 1 - Buffy, Giles, Xander
Season 2 - Spike, Cordelia, Giles
Season 3 - Xander, Willow, Faith
Season 4 - Giles, Oz, Xander
Season 5 - Buffy, Spike, Riley (shocking I know)
Season 6 - Buffy, Tara, Willow
Season 7 - Xander, Spike, Giles

Angel

Season 1 - Angel, Doyle
Season 2 - Angel, Lindsay, Kate
Season 3 - Wesley, Cordelia, Angel
Season 4 - Angel, Wesley, Faith
Season 5 - Wesley, Angel, Lorne, Spike, Gunn

It's a testament to both shows that only Angel manages to make every season of his show while Buffy really only carried the show (for me, interest wise) for less than half of her seasons.
