*Shakes head vigorously* Good idea, but I personally I think it would have to be Spike!

Another thing I never got was why The First never appeared like Kendra to taunt Buffy. That would have been mega. Bianca Lawson would have been able to play the villain great I think! Given the number of characters killed off in the earlier seasons, it's an absolute travesty that they ended up cutting people down left, right and centre during season seven so that The First would have someone to play. I realise there are issues with commitment and actors moving on, but the first episode - with people who blamed Buffy for their deaths coming back to haunt her - really set a theme that they never went back to, with people whose deaths Buffy blamed herself for. I wish they'd brought Jesse back; it's one of my biggest niggles about the Buffyverse, that Jesse was Willow and Xander's number one BFF in the first episode, yet he never got so much as a mention again! I love the idea of Buffy visiting Joyce's grave - and Spike coming up behind her, echoing Angel appearing behind her in 'Forever' - but scenes like that always work better without dialogue, for me. I never thought about Riley not mentioning it. Faith could have been filled in by Willow on the way to Sunnydale and not had the nerve to mention anything to Buffy...but Riley? It should have been a shock to him.
I always wished that Buffy had mentioned something about Joyces presense being with her when she talked about being in heaven to Spike in Afterlife.
And that grave scene would have been great. I really think there were a lot of missed opportunities in season 7 to throw back to the earlier seasons. They could have made season 7 an awesome cap to the series by bringing back so many characters and really messing with the gang. What if they had brought Oz back and then Willow goes to hug him and goes right through him...that would have messed her up to find out that Oz had died from the first.
I also would have liked to have seen the First take on more one-off people from earlier seasons. That would have been great if the three spirits in the first episode had been actual deaths from seasons 1-3, bring back some one-off actors who got killed on screen. That would have really thrown Buffy off, to see people that she knew and didn't save instead of three victims that she never met.

This reminds me of people's reactions to Cordy's death. No funeral, no reaction of old friends (Xander for example) This stuff has never bother me personally.
It's possible that Riley never even noticed with the length of his stay. I had to go and check a transcript though, cause I honestly thought he or Sam brought it up somewhen.

We don't know that Riley or Faith went told of screen.....
I think they could have done Buffy going to see her mothers grave when she got kicked out of her home, when everyone turned on her. That would have been great. and Sad.

Just reminded me. If Buffy was in heven...would she have seen her mother??? She didn't talk about it or did i miss it?

I was just listening to OMWF in the car on the way home from work tonight thinking about this very question. I would've liked to hear about this from Buffy or some other kind of details about the "Heaven" she was in.

I think Willow would have filled Faith in during the trip from L.A to Sunnydale.

I think that's a pretty big omission now that you mentioned it, though I didn't notice it before. That might be because I try to think about "As You Were" as little as possible ;-)

That never even dawned on me. Now that I think about it, that is a pretty HUGE ommission! Same here.

If there is one thing I love about Joss is he works with layer upon layer of metaphor. I believe the reason why the writers didn't pay homage to Joyce's death every time an old character came back was it would take away the focus of the episode.
I appreciate why Joss didn't keep bringing up Joyce's death, Season 6 and 7 were about Buffy growing up and establishing a sense of independence. Season 6 she made mistake after mistake, not unlike most of us do when we first move out of our parent's house.... and season 7 was about Buffy using her power to become a leader. Even Giles had issues with that.
About Buffy visiting her mother's grave after they blew up Sunnydale: wasn't her mother's grave blown up too? Same for Tara's grave?

I appreciate why Joss didn't keep bringing up Joyce's death, Season 6 and 7 were about Buffy growing up and establishing a sense of independence I don't think it would have taken away from anything. With the history that Buffy has with both of those characters, I just expected a moment. Even Amy's "hey, sorry about your mom" was nice.

lol, i was actually referring to the point of going back to her grave after the big blow out hmm... i definately see your point, it would have been nice to see at least Riley say something about Joyce. however i don't see joss bringing up something like that too many times without it having a pertinant value to the plot at hand.

When Riley returned to the Summer's house, I was just waiting for him to say "where's Joyce?" and it never happened! I was so disappointed because I wanted to see what Buffy would say and wanted to see Riley's reaction. Did anyone else think about this? you know what, i never noticed. i guess because, at that point, i was used to joyce not being there. so it didnt cross my mind.

would have been interesting to see his reaction. But he had to know something. I mean, he knew where to find Buffy-at double meat. and when buffy told the others riley was there, they were surprised. they wouldn't have been if they had told him where to find buffy (they would have known he was there) so maybe he had intelligence watching her. She was able to call for him (with spike's chip going crazy). or maybe he did ask willow or someone to tell him where buffy was (at work) and they told him then.
