I wouldn't call Buffy a girly show. It appeals to lots of different people and to both genders. And that Yugioh thing I don't really understand. Also, I'm straight and I like Buffy.

I don't see it as a girlys how..although I do think there are more girl fans then guys. But, I think this show has something both genders can relate to.

Guess it just goes to show you can judge a show by its name

Guess it just goes to show you can judge a show by its name Serisouly. I mention Buffy around people and they just laugh, but saying "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sounds so natural and not weird to me. Only fans of the show actually get it.

Does everyone know the story about how when Joss was pitching the show around, a few times some at the meeting would ask, "This name Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is that what you really want it to be", and there would be some incredulity in their tone? To which Joss would reply, "If they're not on board for title, then maybe we can do with those viewers". So just the name caused some less than favorable reactions to begin with.

Despite some opinions, I'm pretty sure I'm a guy. >_>
The name is rather awkward, but if that's what Joss wanted, then it cannot be wrong. Joss is Jesus, so his word is gospel.

Additionally, going back to the discussion on another bulletin board, where it was decided that guy movies were defined by HUGELY, BIG explosions and car chases. I actually posed the premise "that means Silence of the Lambs is a chick flick", and all the guys in the discussion were OK and did not object to that premise.

Girly? No way! Everyone can relate to the things the gang goes through. I am in High School and at times I like to think "What would the Scoobies do right now?" Buffy is in no way just for girls. If it was why would it have sooooooo many hot women on it??!?!

I always thought of Buffy as a chick show, but I guess not, my brother and dad used to watch a few of the earlier seasons but then it starting getting into a bunch of witchcraft.

It's a tad frustrating being a manly man and being a fan of BTVS and AtS. I usually never bring up the show to anyone because most people I hang with are non-fans who scoff at the show title and do think its girlie from their limited knowledge of it.

I am the only fan in my immediate group of friends but they are all Buffy-sympathizers They all watched through season 2 or 3 and then gave up because they were just watching for the Buffy/Angel lurve. My brother watches too but he is more of an Angel fan. His best friend (the manliest man I have ever met) is obsessed with Angel. My dad watched both shows. To some people it is a girly show. To smart people, it's neither and both. well put! I can see why a strong female lead character would mostly appeal to women but I think Buffy has something for everyone!

As I said in the other thread, its probably because a lot of insecure, immauture males can't handle strong, female charatcers

Funny how it's apparently only the ones who call it girly that are the insecure people. A lot of you lads and lasses seem very determined to downplay this show's very obvious girlyness. It's a show about female empowerment for christ's sake.
What I dont get is why everyone is acting as though being labelled girly is such a bad thing. Arguing that the show is deeper than that pretty much confirms that it is girly lol. "The characters have feelings? ewww that sheet is girly!"
There will be the odd dicckless who claim girlyness is why they can't watch it, but they'd probably bawl their wee eyes out at the end of the Gift like any other regular person, and that's probably the real reason they don't watch it. But come on now, don't bring yourselves down to their level or delude yourself as to this show's type.
What matters is that this show is phucking awesome. It's gotta be the girlyest thing I have on DVD by a long way and I'm damn proud to have it.

I do think that most of the time Buffy is a girly show. That's why Angel exists, it compliments Buffy very well.

I'm a straight guy and I love the show, as do many of my other straight guy friends. Yes the show does have themes that are oriented to women, but it also has plenty that are oriented toward men or either gender. As far as I'm concerned, girly and female empowering are nearly opposite genres. One thing that I totally agree with is when Joss said that the strong women in his shows should be a non issue, Buffy, Angel, and Firefly are about groups of strong people that work together to overcome their own flaws and insecurities, just b/c Buffy has a female main character and, I admit, kind of a goofy name, doesn't mean that it's a girly show.
EDIT: Also, I cry every time I watch The Body, The Gift, and several other episodes. Emotions are a human thing, not a chick thing.
