Well said! I also love the fact that you made your dad watch it. I doubt my dad would ever watch it (he mainly only likes boring old westerns, lol.), but it would be awesome if he did! He knows I love the show, but I don't think he gets the appeal. Maybe I should introduce him to Firefly, might have better luck with that one. Thanks. And you know...my Dad is also a big fan of old westerns. He likes Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel and other stuff like that. I actually got him to watch Serenity with me which convinced him to watch Firefly which lead to him agreeing to watch Buffy. It's all about how you rope them in, for lack of a better phrase. If you you can convince your Dad to watch Firefly and he ends up liking it then you will have a much better chance of getting him to watch other Joss Whedon creations.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The show revolves mainly around a teenage girl who slays vampires and her struggles to maintain a normal life under those special circumstances. Can she still be a cheerleader? How can she handle relationships with boys? Will she survive to make it to prom?
The guy representation is predominantly a stuffy father-figure, a dorky guy who's also super cute (of course), and a dreamy love interest who lurks in the shadows and broods.
....lol not a girly show at all.

But only if you take the opinion that male/female domains of existence are entirely separate entities. Given the fact that I interact with women as much as I do men, their way of perceiving the world and the challenges that they face socially and emotionally during life are of interest to me. If that makes me girly, then fair enough. Frankly, I would think that most straight males would love an entertaining portal into the female psyche! Useful stuff!

Yep, and there lies the problem, in my opinion. Buffy being dubbed a girly show seems to piss people off when it's actually a great thing. It's about female empowerment afterall.

Yeah, when I made this thread... what was it, two years ago? I didn't mean for the term "girly" to mean something negative, more just bringing up if the show is targeted for only the female audience, which is clearly not true.

It's girly show in that it centers around a female character and deals with how she approaches her problems. Men and women deal with love a little different so Buffy lets out more emotion than men characters might. Not saying men don't feel...they just often show it less dramatically. But all of this seems to assume that men and women live in separate bubbles and never interact with one another. Fair enough - i'm a man and may express myself emotionally in a different manner to many women. But that doesn't mean that I don't actually encounter the emotional output of women and am somehow unable to empathise or understand a female character. It is childish to assume that a show with a female lead is a girl's show and a show with a male lead is a boy's show - like regressing us all to playing with Barbie OR Action Man. Never said anything about bubbles. Of course men and women interact and of course exceptions could be made. Do I think it's a girly show entirely? No. Does it have what some might consider girly moments? Yes. All depends on what your perception of girly is. To some its the displaying of emotions to some its as shallow as warddrobe and makeup. If the lead was a male, do you think he would cry as much as Buffy did throughout the show? Again, not saying men don't cry or that men are weak for crying. Just putting the question out there. Not taking a side on it one way or the other.

Girly? That's interesting. When I think of "girly" I think like, The Notebook or Pretty In Pink. How anyone can think Buffy is girly is beyond me. What, because Buffy herself is a girl?

I agree with you that a male lead almost certainly would not have cried so much (although on a side note I am very happy that tough male leads are allowed crying time on TV these days - just look at Jack Bauer, and he's hard as coffin nails!) but that simply makes the point that Buffy has a female lead, not that it's a girly show in my opinion.

I don't think Buffy is a girl show, but i think its a realistic and relatable show, which one thing i love about Buffy. The realistic term is that life is hard. The slayer mythology was an excellent concept to show that life is hard.

It's not really the sort of thing I pick to watch when I want a girly night in tbh.
I think it could be seen as girly as there are some quite emotional episodes, the majority of characters are female and as someone said it's about a teenage girl growing up. But then it does also appeal to men, with all the violence and the slaying and all the pretty women, so could also be seen as a guy show. And what straight guy doesn't want to watch pretty women killing things?

To the person up-thread who said there are hardly any straight male fans... I can name a lot that I know personally! Here goes, My 50 year old dad (really likes it a lot), my 15 year-old friend ( LOVES it), my mom's 40 year old co-worker( worhsips it), his two sons (both enjoy it), my college friend ( thinks it's cool), 2 boys I know from school ( enjoy it), that dude who works at Blockbuster who I always talk to about Joss Whedon, lol ( is a big fan). Oh, plus this guy I met a Staples once who mentioned it a lot when ranting about his hatred of the 'Twilight' series to a random girl in a 'Twilight' shirt. We totally tagged teamed on that poor 'Twihard' and told her to watch 'Buffy'.( My life is strange) That's ten for you right there! And I've only been a Buffy fan for less than 2 years and I met all of these people in real life in that time frame.
So in answer, No I don't think Btvs is girly. Obviously there are some girly themes with romance, etc, but Buffy seems to have a pretty even split as far as gender appeal. However, I generally don't trust the critical opinions of people who enjoy 'The Hills' anyway. I figure we would disagree a lot.
