I'm new here, only made a couple posts so far, so I figured a good way to start would be to make a new topic. So far I'm really excited to be here, seems like a lot of fun. So, hello, hopefully I'll get to know all of you in the coming weeks, months, etc. Oh, and thanks to henz for welcoming me in my replies and giving me "kudos" or somesuch (Dunno what they are, but they sound good, hehe).
ANYWAY, on to the topic. This is a question that has nagged me for a while. In a 'verse with so many dimensions (even one with nothing but shrimp!), why is everyone throwing such a hullabaloo over Earth? What makes it so important? It wasn't a big problem early on in the shows, as most of the villains were clearly Earth-based, so it'd make sense for them to focus on their own dimension. And when Glory came around, it still made sense, as she didn't care about Earth at all, just wanted to get home. W&H makes sense too, as we have evidence they operate in several different dimensions. There are at least two extra-dimensional entities, however, one from each show, that seem to put an inordinate amount of concern into our dimension.
The first is, fittingly, The First. This is the first evil, the source of it all, not a being in the truest sense but rather a force of nature, from the sounds of it forged along with the rest of creation, before Earth even existed (side thought that just popped up: Does the existence of The First Evil imply there's a First Good too? Hm. Topic for another time, heh). Given its nature, it clearly exists across all dimensions. So why's it care so damn much about tipping the scales of good and evil in our dimension? I suppose, given that it seems to be able to exist in several places at once, that it could possibly be simultaneously (on its playing field of eternity) operating in all the other dimensions as well. And maybe it doesn't care that much, and that's why we won't see it coming back any time soon. But it still seems strangely interested in becoming flesh in our dimension specifically. Maybe its ultimate goal is to become flesh in and overrun every single dimension? Dunno. It's so hard to talk about strange, omnipotent, eternal forces of nature, heh.
The significantly clearer example of this, however, comes from Jasmine. A Power That Was, that clearly has been around the block, dimensionally speaking, she shows an inordinate amount of interest in our tiny little planet, to the point of using another dimension as "practice." Am I misunderstanding the concept of the Powers That Be? I always envisioned them as the counterpart to the Senior Partners, the God to their Satan, and if that's the case, it would imply that they, too, operate on several different dimensions, only as a force of good instead of evil. Could it be that they're just an Earth-Based thing? Otherwise I can't get why Jasmine would focus so strongly on our dimension when it's clear there are others that have it a lot worse.
So why's everyone seem to care about Earth so much? Is it just a byproduct of our own ego-centric attitude seeping into our works of art? Or is there something inherently special about the dimension that Earth inhabits within the Buffyverse? What's everyone else think?
