Well I suppose I'm really just making this thread because I recently rewatched the episode "The Body" from Buffy and "Lineage" from Angel.
{Spoilers}
Although the shows can be extremely funny and light hearted, I think its amazing how they can have such serious and deep moments such as those episodes. I mean with the episode "The Body" it's perfect for how little there is of the episode. It's as if you would expect so much dialogue and panic, but rather it's extraordinary for how little dialogue there is and for the very few scenes of actual panic. And the cinematography is amazing, almost as if you were there with buffy when she found her dead mother on the couch, very gripping.
As for "Lineage" I gotta admit I actually just saw this episode last night for the first time, and my god there was so much of that episode I didn't expect. It's just such a left turn to have it begin with just some random baddies then lead up to the epic dual between Wesley and his "Father". I mean I know in the end his Father just turned out to be a cyborg and not his real dad, but it was just such a shock to see that Wesley would actually shoot his dad, not once but multiple times! Of course I can understand why he would if his father was truely going to hold Fred hostage and steal Angel's willpower, but you just have to ask yourself "would I be able to live with myself knowing I would kill my own father if it came down to it?"
Well I just thought I'd give my opinions on at least those two episodes. I know there are plenty of other really deep episodes of both series that I didn't mention but I just thought I'd make those two episodes very clear since I feel they deserve all the credit they get.

"Lie To Me" from season 2 of Buffy was a very serious episode to me. And "Reprise" from Angel season 2 was also very serious. The way angel man-handled Darla then had sex with her was a very intense scene.

I thought Becomming part 1 and 2 were pretty serious but still great episodes. In specific where Buffy has to kill Angel to stop Acathala even though she knew he wasn't Angelus any more. The Gift was also an amazing episode and of course the ending was superb. Good post by the way

Apocalypse Nowish is a rather serious Angel episode. That episode was pretty much all doom and gloom. Plus Angel, Wesley, Gunn and Lorne all get their butts handed to them at the end; that was one brutal fight.

I thought Selfless was a very serious episode, the first one where Anya takes center stage and has to deal with serious life/death choices.

Definitely 'Lies my Parents Told Me'...it shows the seriousness of Spike's life and unlife.
Plus, "Conversations with Dead People" is really heavy. That discussion Willow has, and the reasoning why she can't see Tara...that was...rough, man.
Actually, there were more serious episodes to me...even if just in context...because even the seemingly silly episodes (like "Storyteller") had seriuos connations.
On an unrelated note, my partner in crime, Eryn, just wrote a little parodic ditty to Jon Bon Jovi's 'Bad Name' when I asked what some funny Buffy episodes were. It goes a little something like this:
"Stake through the heart You're to blame Buffy, you give love a bad name."
She claims to be pro-vampire. LOL.

A lot of great mentions so far. There's a lot of very serious, heavy episodes. One particular one that comes to mind off the top of my head is That Old Gang Of Mine. Despite opening with my favorite and most hilarious scene in all of Angel, the episode itself is very dark and tackles some serious issues. Some others...
Buffy: Afterlife, The Weight Of The World
Angel: I forget which episode it is but the one where angel sets darla and dru on fire. I think it's Redefinition. Also Hero would be one. Another one that gets to me is the Trial.

I have to say "A Whole in the World." The famous sceen between Wesly and Fred is so intense it's almost to much to bare. Not sur if that's what you're looking for as far as being a serious episode or not. That definitly stands out for me.

In 'Lineage', who sent those cyborgs to attack W&H again? I can't remember.

Passions was a very serious episode. Killing Jenny and placing her in Giles's bed with a romantic set-up.I felt that this was the first dark episode of the series

Passions was a very serious episode. Killing Jenny and placing her in Giles's bed with a romantic set-up.I felt that this was the first dark episode of the series this is one of the main scenes in buffy/angel to really disturb me properly. i must have been really young when first watching it as well,,,like 11 or 12. For me it was one of the most defining moments in the show and one that really haunted me at that point. I know episodes such as the body and the gift get labelled straight away as the tragic serious episodes but i find passions to be just as equally tragic if not moreso personally.
