(I know the introduction to this story talks about the O.C., but please read on because I think it will be worth your time)
I recently ran into an old friend at Wal-mart when I was purchasing the O.C. Fourth Season on DVD. She made fun of me for buying it, but I didn't care because I know that the O.C. is not the show for everyone. A few days later I caught her on AIM and we started talking. I mentioned that the O.C. wasn't my favorite television show and that my favorite was actually Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
She then said "Hahaha that's a good one...Wait...you are being sarcastic right?" I replied with "No...It really is my favorite show. Buffy is amazing." She then had a jolly good time with her laughter and proceeded to make fun of me for being a big fan of the Buffyverse while telling me that Buffy was entirely too "Teeny-Bop" and that Anime is the greatest thing upon God's green earth.
While I'm not an Anime fan, I did NOT (repeat DID NOT) bash her for liking Anime because I am fully aware that different people have different tastes. I just laughed along and threw in random tidbits such as "Well it gets alot less Teeny-Bop later in the series" and "Well it's obviously amazing since it's spin-off show Angel ran for 5 seasons which is very successful considering most spin-off shows in the past haven't done so well." She still stuck to the theory that I'm a tard for loving the Buffy, but I'm fine with that because I still love the show just as much as I did before that conversation.
My main point in this is that it seems like most people hear "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and they just assume that it's a TV show with a blonde girl running around with a sharp stick poking random people in the chest to see if they go poof. As we all know (being huge fans) there is SO much more to the show than vampires and demons. Almost every area of the human walk is covered in Buffy in some form or fashion as well as many things that none of us will ever encounter (even though I would love to fly like Willow or turn into whatever Halloween costume I'm wearing).
The elements that Joss and Co. tackled were outstanding and they gave us an insight into regular life as well as a world with demons. It's one thing to write an amazing show that deals with everything that happens everyday, but to intertwine that with a world full of magic, demons, vampires, and to pull it off so beautifully is a thing of art.
I know that this friend of mine will never read this, and that she will continue to watch her Anime instead of Buffy, but I just felt like getting this off my chest and I figured at least one person on this forum would agree with at least 42% of what I have said here.
