I loved 'Beer Bad'. I thought it was one of the funniest episodes and also had some good story to it, like Xander trying to fit into a part of the college lifestyle and the Willow and Parker chat. And Buffy falling off the chair and getting angry at it was classic. 'Hell's Bells' and 'Buffy Vs. Dracula' are great episodes too! I find that a lot of people don't like 'Buffy Vs. Dracula' but I thought it was good. It was the start of Buffy showing her dark side and made her want to know more about her power. i love buffy vs dracula its like one of my favorite episodes of all time and i reckon i have seen it at least 1000 times! anyway back on subject i always thought she looked cavemany enough with or without dirt

Erm, something about Beer Bad, unlike any other episode, kind of sets me off. It just feels awkward to watch.

Beer Bad > Hells Bells... Umm.... that is a surprising claim (lol) As far as both Buffy and Angel episodes, (that is, I think, 254 when added up) "Beer Bad" is easily the worst. It's nearly unwatchable, a quality that none of the other 253 episodes have. There are bad episodes ("The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco," "Superstar," "Doublemeat Palace") but then there is "Beer Bad." It's not even 'bad, but okay because it's BtVS.' It's just... really really awful. There are... people out there who don't like Hells Bells? Would that be from this dimension or the shrimp one? Opinions differ it seems... they HAVE to if you honestly don't like Superstar : O I make it known where-ever I can that I hate Hells Bells lol. I skip it now whenever the episode comes up. The awful 6th season is far better without it.

I don't hate Beer Bad. I used to, but I recently watched season four again, and it stood up to scrutiny better than I thought it would. The Scooby moments are nice and I dig the Willow/Paker scenes. The moralistic pandering really pisses me off, though.

I don't mind Beer Bad, but it's not one of my favorites, season 4 as a whole isn't one of my favorite seasons. There are funny moments in the episode (Giles describing 'cave' Buffy, Buffy spinning around in the chair, and Buffy hitting Parker over the head). I'm rewatching the Buffy seasons in order right now, and I'm on Season 4 and I'm finding I'm having a problem getting through it; it just isn't an exciting season at all. And I'm finding myself disliking Riley even more than usual, lol. But I'm trying to get through the rest (I only have a few more eps to go) so I can get to season 5, which is easily one of my favorite seasons. The only thing I really like about the season 4 episodes is the Willow/Tara relationship. Those early scenes were so cute, I just wish there was more of them to cover up some of the Riley scenes I don't really have an issue with "Buffy vs. Dracula", again it's not my favorite episode, but it does have some funny beats to it. "Superstar" is great though, I like it because I'm a Jonathan fan. Some people won't like me saying this, but I don't care much for "Storyteller". Just not a fan of Andrew... The only episode I have issues with watching is "Beauty and the Beasts". I like the Angel storyline, but not the other demon storyline. The 1 Angel episode I cannot stand is "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco". That is one of the worst eps ever.... I always shudder whenever I get to that episode.

Also, forgot to mention that part of the episode "Life Serial" makes me cringe. I really like the beginning of the episode, but when it gets to Buffy drinking Spike's alcohol, and making that "blech" noise, it just drives me nuts, I dunno why.

Why is it that so many people dislike this episode i actually liked it at some points it did get a bit boring but was it really that bad? what was so horrible about it...

Why is it that so many people dislike this episode i actually liked it at some points it did get a bit boring but was it really that bad? what was so horrible about it... I don't completely get the hate for it, either, but I think part of it might be that a lot of people just don't understand the inspiration behind it. Maybe they believe that the "Angel" writers came up with this crazy idea about demon-fighting wrestlers all on their own. (WTF, right? ) But it's actually based on a whole genre of movies that were popular in Mexico during the 1950s, about masked wrestlers who, outside the ring, would also fight criminals and monsters. Crazy, but hey, they were really big at the time. (If you can get ahold of a copy, I seriously recommend the MST3K episode where they used the movie "Samson vs. the Vampire Women". Hilarious.) Considering the large numbers of Mexicans and Hispanics living in LA, it was about time that "Angel" finally got around to telling a story featuring this segment of the local population. The "Cautionary Tale" part of the title is fitting, too, because I think the episode is a humorous-but-interesting look at what Angel could become without his friends, and without the belief that what he was doing mattered. The score for this episode is some of my very favorite work Rob Kral ever did on the show (right up there with his work on the Pylea arc), and the flashback scene where we see Holland Manners as a young, up-and-coming lawyer at W&H was a cool little touch. So, while it doesn't crack my top 10 list of favorite "Angel" eps, I think it's a really good one that's way too underrated by most of the fans...

Oh man, thank you El Diablo. I can never get over people's hatred of The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco...it was the first episode of season 5 that was actually about something relevant to Angel's development since Conviction. I know people like to jump all over it but I think it was pretty much the first sign that the season was going to be alright. The wrestler theme may have been a bit campy but it worked and it really commented very nicely on Angel's role as champion at that point in the series. I too really love the score. If your talking bad episodes it doesn't even rate near the top of that list...You've got most of Season 4 and some episodes like Harm's Way and Unleashed for that.
As for Beer Bad, I agree 100% with Mikey...Wait...wow... But seriously, the writer was responsible for three of the worst episodes of the show and clearly just doesn't understand the characters. I know people for some reason defend Something Blue but it's a similar kind of just not getting the characters that makes her episodes just fall flat. Not to mention the ridiculous preaching about drinking beer that goes on in these episodes (it's much worse in Something Blue where Willow has one beer and Buffy threatens to disown her). Though strangely all three of her eps (Beer Bad, Something Blue, and Where The Wild Things Are) awful as they may be, have some good character bits (Xander as a bartender, the Snoopy Dance, Giles playing Behind Blue Eyes) to them that I wouldn't be shocked if they were another writer's input. There's definately a reason Tracey Forbes wasn't kept on staff. The show's are sometimes at their worst when new-writers are introduced randomly (Normal Again) but sometimes it reveals talents like Drew Goddard

Something Blue... horrible? It's a poor man's Tabula Rasa! (Agree about the quality -- or lack thereof -- of Forbes's other episodes, though, especially Beer Bad.)

Well I wouldn't say the writer of Normal Again was random, Diego something, he was Joss' assistant since Season 2. I wish he would of wrote more, because I thought it was great!

Ah, I missed that comment, too. I find it even more inexplicable for anyone to dislike Normal Again than to dislike Something Blue. Jane Espenson and Sarah Michelle Gellar even mentioned it when asked about their favourite episodes (and James Marsters mentioned Something Blue when asked about his favourite episodes).

Random in the fact that he wasn't a writer. I know everyone seems to love Normal Again as well...but it's another one of those episodes that just writes the characters very off. Buffy trying to kill her friends is as close to character assassination as you can get. And the "Oh aren't we cool?" twist at the end is awful and pretty much mocks the fact that people had taken this universe so seriously for all this time.

Buffy trying to kill her friends was very believable under the circumstances -- at least to me, and apparently to most others. And the last scene doesn't mean anything; Joss said that we still get to choose whether we want to consider it all a figment of Buffy's imagination, and that he himself doesn't.
But, of course, we all like what we like. (For example, I myself have a very strong aversion to The Prom, although everyone else seems to love it.) I was just surprised.

That is a rather great scene at the Espresso Pump. Every time I want to hate an episode completely there is always something in it not to hate! I guess that's why Buffy is the best show ever....

Buffy and her blah was just amazing! It was more of a "bleh" than a "blah". LOL.
It's funny I'm reading this now. I just rewatched Beer Bad earlier this week. It's one of my faves.
But I agree with your opinion on "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco".

Most of that probably lies in just how awesome Anthony Stewert Head is and how perfectly the song fits his character
