I found this on Wikipedia in 'The Killer In Me' section:
After yet another attack of Spike's chip, Buffy and Spike return to the site of the Initiative in hopes of getting some of the drugs Spike was supposedly given to subdue him whenever his chip went crazy. They climb back inside the buried building through a trap door in the ground.
And I found the quote:
"I don't know. (digs through the dirt) Worked pretty good when the Initiative held me captive here. Every time I'd get a little...rambunctious, the chip'd kick in. I feel like my head was gonna explode. They'd dope me up, and everything would be all daffodils and teddy bears. For a couple of hours anyway."
When was this and if it was when The Initiative first put the chip in Spike's head, then how? Because as far as we know the chip only started malfunctioning at this point in time (present day, 'The Killer In Me') and he didn't stay there very long. So what does Spike mean by this?

I suppose they had to work out the kinks before the chip started to work. i mean, in the Initiative, we see spike hurt people when he escape. i assume that they are humans, so obvioulsy the chip didn't work perfectly from the start.

This is from season 7 isnt it ? And Buffy decides to remove the chip Yeah that's right. I just assumed the reason Spike could hurt people when he escaped was because the chip hadn't fully kicked in yet. The thing is the way Spike talks about it makes it seem like he was there for days. It always seemed that he wasn't there for that long? I'm so confused. Actually, now I come to think about it, two Initiative doctors came to him and had some sort of drug they were going to inject him with. So it is possible that the chip wasn't working as they planned and Spike kept having those headaches, but they gave him the drug to calm him down and to make the chip work. Then the problem was fixed and the chip started to kick in after he escaped.

Good call. It didn't seem like he was there for that long, although there is no way to know for sure.
He didn't know he had a chip til he got out though did he? Season 7 strikes again!

I'm assuming that you mean that the writers forgot that. otherwise ignore my answer; Maybe he got headaches from the chip while he was captured, and then got drugs, but it wasn't until he figured out that there was a chip in his head that he understood why he had headaches.

Personally,I hated the whole chip plot device.I really felt that they could have come up with a better way to keep Spike on the show.

James Marsters would agree with you.
James Marsters: Yeah, I don't like that whole chip. I didn't like that at all. I thought that it would be more interesting to watch Spike decide to try to be good rather than be forced to be good; I thought it would make it more interesting to see him try and fail to be good.

Well you do get to see him try and fail eventually. I always liked the chip. It's against any vampire's nature to try and be good, even Spike's. They're sorta exploring that with Gunn in After the Fall.

I liked the chip too. I'm just gonna go with before Spike escaped, Spike would become "rambunctionus" (get stressed) and would get those headaches which would have him on the floor in pain and such. The doctors then gave him the drugs every few hours when he got the headaches, THEN we pick up from the beginning of 'The Initaitve' where Spike wakes up and can't remember any of it, because of all the drugs being used to sedate and fix him. Nice enough believeable theory? It's the one I'm gonna go with.

I remember having this discussion with a friend years ago, we both agreed it was likely that the anaesthetic that was used during the chip implant had not worn off by the time Spike was escaping, so when he hit the Doctors he did not feel the pain from the chip. So pretty much what "Slayer489" said, that's the same conclusion we came to.
I also think the chip was a fantastic plot device. Much better than if Spike had just tried to be good. It's been thoroughly covered in both Buffy and Angel that vampires have no conscience, no desire to do what's "right" and "good", they are driven by base instincts, not ethics.
