...but did Buffy succeed in killing The First? I never really understood if she could kill it or not, with the whole "non corporeal" thing going on.

No she never killed it. You can't kill evil.

The First was able to unleash it's army in the first place because of a disturbance in the Slayer line, ie. Buffy coming back to life. With it's army destroyed by WR&H's amulet, The First was was pretty much screwed for the time being, however Im not sure whether the creation of a Slayer Army factors into helping The First arise again, or effectively preventing it. Technically, a slayer army is a MAJOR disturbance of the Slayer line, much greater than Buffy's resurrection. However, it can be argued that the army is more of a rewriting of the entire Slayer line, as opposed to just a wrinkle in the line. Personally, I think an entire Slayer army is enough to keep the First at bay for a long time. They now have the technology, eyes and ears and allies necessary to stamp out a problem like The First building another army under their noses before it comes to fruition. In S7 the Scoobs were caught with their pants down. They had completely forgotten about the First. I think they are now aware of what it's capable of given the time, and will have the good sense to be more vigilant about the First's activities, should it begin majorly scheming and sending waves through the underworld. I don't think we'll be hearing from The First for a good long while.

Just remember that The First will always live. It has an ETERNITY literally to act. Buffy and the gang destroyed it's army, yeah it could build another, but now there are 1800 slayers in the world, making the balance shift to good. Another army would be wiped out fast, especially with the technology they now have. The First didn't count on Willow making every potential a slayer, which is why it thought that it'd win the fight hands down.

The First's army was just stalled for the time being, so to say. It did have a lifetime to build its army, so basically it's just waiting again for the balances to shift in its favor, I would suppose. Evil will always be around, but the First's specific army is done for now.

but in order for the first to become corporeal he had to tip the scales in his favor with his army. When Buffy made her slayers and killed so many of the uber vamps, didnt this knock the scale over in her favor? it seemed to me that if the first wanted to try again he wouldnt be able to for thousands of years, or until the end of magic maybe

The First also created his army inside the Hellmouth. If it was to try to tip the scales again, it would have to create his army at the other hellmouths.
