I don't know if this has been posted here yet, so I apologize in advance if it has This is a very interesting analysis of "As You Were". It made me see the episode very differently. It's long, but well worth the read. I look forward to reading your replies. Click here: theohara.livejournal.com/162286.html?page=2#comments

Thanks for posting this! I found the new perspective very interesting. I myself have never liked that episode much, because of the whole "Riley good, Spike bad" thing about it. And i have also never thought it was Spike that was the Doctor. It always left a bad taste in my mouth that Riley did what he did to Buffy, left, and then comes back married, happy and completely destroys what little bit of cold comfort she has found with Spike.Plus the poor girl is broke, trying to make ends meet, and he couldn't come see her after work and instead has to pressure her to walk out on her job? I saw this episode as Riley taking his revenge for Spike busting him out to Buffy that he was getting bitten in a ramshackle vamp nest, and also Buffy continually getting kicked when she was down by being made to realize that you have to do what you have to do sometimes for your own sanity, regardless of whether others (and yourself) will think you are "sinking to a new low". Plus the thing we all inevitably go through inside when we see an ex we were really in love with and they seem to be doing so well, and we question our own decisions. I definately liked the opinions offered in this, now i'm going to have to go rewatch that episode and see if it helps me like it more. And the stuff that was said about Buffy and Spike behind the tree cracked me up cause it was so true, lol . Dawn can't see through your bedroom door but she sure can out the window!! What was up with having them out there? lol. I guess i always assumed that it was Buffy's way of getting him to move on along afterward and not hang around.

Great comments, sitedbyspike. I too really enjoyed the article, but the author does seem a bit biased - he pretty much hates Riley. lol

Wow.
I really enjoyed that article. I always thought that Spike wasn't the Doctor, but I was never sure of who it was. It makes a lot of sense that it could/would be Riley, and every little detail that was analyzed was great. I want to rewatch that episode and see everything that the author is pointing out. The only things that I have a difference in thoughts are: 1. Is Riley really that smart to think of the revenge plot that quickly? 2. How much time really elapsed? He would have to have a looooot of time to complete everything that he did, like the kicking of Dr's ass/moving the eggs before Spike got back to the crypt.

I wouldn't be surprised if Season Eight retconned the whole "Doctor" thing in order to set up Riley as a villain. Unlike Warren's return, that is something that would actually make sense in the larger story.

very interesting. I didn't ever really think of the whole doctor scenario having any bigger purpose, but I have talked about the importance of 'as you were' as an episode as it is the only time we see riley after he leaves Buffy. And since he's back in season 8-it would make sense for our writers to be connecting the story. I can't wait to see what is going on with Riley!! And where's Sam?!
