How does Angel do that illusion where sort of re-lives the experience where Fred was attacked? I don't get it. Pretty lame in my book, I'm hopoing one of you could make some sense of it...

That was Angel using his photographic memory to remember where everyone was sitting. What he was seeing was never actually there in the Hyperion lobby, it was all in his head.

I get that, what I'm saying is how? He says that when he saw Lilah it trigger this ability. So how exactly did he get this new found power? Why does he not keep using it? Why did the conversation with Lilah kick it in? How did Gunn see it too? You see what I'm saying? I know I didn't explain my question too well the first time around, but honestly I don't really understnad it well enough to explain it...

He always had a photographic memory, we just never really saw him use it too much. When he remembered seeing Lilah there he just started to remember where everyone was sitting, to try and figure out if anyone in the audience could have done it. Gunn didn't actually see it either, he just saw what Angel was doing and thought it was cool that he remembered all of that.

It's just good memory, not a power lol
Have you never met anyone with crazy memory? Angel is one of those people.

I think this ability connects to how he's such a good artist. He has great visualization powers. Angel's way smarter than he's normally given credit for...its kinda hard to shine when you're surrounded by physics geniuses and watcher head boys .

Seeing Lilah triggered the photographic memory because Lilah usually equals trouble. It was a premonition of sorts. Also, we get to see this power used on other occasions. One that comes to mind is when they're running from the zombies at Wolfram & Hart and Angel memorizes the code for the White Room in the elevator.
And excellent point about his excellent memory making him a great artist, I never thought of it that way. Although I think a large portion of that is also attributed to being able to hone certain skills and talents over long periods of time, being vampire and all.

Yeah, definately not a power, Angel always possessed his photographic memory. All jokes made on the show to the contrary, this is one of the things that actually did make Angel into an excellent detective. It was simply a way of visualising it for himself, accessing bits of his memory using visual stimulation and using Lilah as a reference point for himself. The recurring device of his incredible talent at drawing things from memory is definately along the same lines. Also, he was able to vividly remember many details from his life almost centuries later.
