He was apparently the first choice, but because he was busy with Buffy's seventh season, Nate Fillion was casted instead.

yup... Joss wrote it for Nick actually, so he had to find a person who was essentially Nick Brendon and he chose Nathan... was Nathan cast in Buffy or Firefly first? i assume Firefly because of the "Special Guest Star" credit he got.

Or, ya know, because Firefly started WAY before Caleb showed up and it's been made pretty clear that Nathan, Gina, and Adam were cast as Caleb, Jasmine, and Hamilton respectively as a way of getting these actors back on screen.

yeah, joss had to re-tool a lot of the characters because when some of the actors were cast, they dropped out initially... i think wash was supposed to be a Mal type character and vice versa.

Seriously? I can't imagine Nicholas as Captain Malcolm. Although I do want Nick to get more work and get noticed and whatnot, I'm pleased with Joss' choice on casting Nathon Fillion as the main role.

hmm, interesting. It makes sense though, since much of Mal's dialogue has a certain Xander flair to it. I think Nick would've been a very different Mal than Nathan, no matter how similar the dialogue is. Their acting styles are similar, with the quick little mannerisms, etc, but the feeling they put behind the words and actions are quite different. I think it would be very interesting to see Nick reading some Mal scripts.

I could see Nick's Mal being a little more vulnerable, maybe not quite as prone to hiding his emotions as Nathan's Mal...
Best wishes,
Scott

I'm pretty sure this is a rumor. Heard it before, but it doesn't really work when you apply logic. Joss pitched Firefly for the same season that he had Buffy Season Seven lined up for. Why would he make the role for Nick, knowing Nick would have a huge role in Buffy Season Seven? Doesn't really fit.

Where did this info come from?
I don't Nick would've been a good Mal. The strength and arrogance of Nathan's character was one of the hooks for the firefly cast.
It coulda worked and I woulda love it, but at the same time it wouldn't have been... well, firefly.

Do you have a source? it's definitely in the commentary for something... maybe Serenity? here's a wikipedia type article on it.: www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Malcolm_Reynolds

Thats really interesting and I am glad that Nathan got it but now I am kind of sad because maybe we could have had some Nick Brendon butt.

this still doesn't make any sense if it was another creator sure but did this conversation actually happen?
Joss: Hey Nicky come on in I wanted to talk to you about this new show I've got going on.
Nicholas: Sure Joss, what's it about.
Joss: Well get this, it's a western space show.
Nicholas: Really? Star Wars meets Bonanza?
Joss: Something like that, don't look at me like that I made a show where a ditzy valley girl kills demons and people love it.
Nicholas: True, you got me there.
Joss: So anyway Nicky that's why I called you in here, I had an idea that you would be perfect to play the lead character.
Nicholas: Really?!? That's great! You know I've always felt I really had leading man qualities. In fact just the other.......
Joss: So anyway we'll start shooting in October. (Or whenever they start shooting tv shows)
Nicholas: So are you trying to tell me I'm fired?
Joss: No, of course not I just offered you the job.
Nicholas: But what about my other job.
Joss: Other job?
Nicholas: You know the one I've been on the last 6 seasons, about the demon slaying blond? The one that begins shooting season 7 this October?
Joss: Oh that's right your Xander, hey what's your brother been up to lately?
Sorry I got a little chatty. Anyway my point is, how did this conversation happen? Were they supposed to kill Xander off and then changed their minds?

I have heard this rumor about nick being the first choice before...but i dunno if its ever been confirmed. I love nick brendon so I would have loved to see what he would have done with the role, but I also love nathan and what he did with it, so I am happy either way!

I can't picture Nick as Mal at all to be honest. Nathan has such a dark air to him, he's menacing and hard in a way i'm not sure i'd ever get from Nick. I think a lighter, more emotionally open Mal would have made a very different show.
