NBC Announces Renewels

NBC has announced which new freshman series will return next season, and Bionic Woman is not on the list. (Neither is the time-traveling epic, Journeyman.) It appears that without actually saying it, NBC may have quietly canceled the freshman series. Rumors have circulated for months regarding Bionic Woman's dubious fate, and the series has been officially listed as canceled by the futoncritic. While NBC doesn't announce its full Fall schedule until May, Bionic Woman looks to be a long-shot for renewel.
Bionic Woman debuted to fantastic ratings on Wednesday September 26th, 2007. However, ratings dropped by nearly half in the second and following weeks, causing critics and fans to point fingers at possible reasons for this free fall. Michelle Ryan's cold, uninspired performance as Jaime Somers, the irritating presence of Lucy Hale as her sister, Becca Somers, uneven scripts and whatever else that could be picked on.
It is unclear whether the writers' strike helped the series by accommodating a longer run, forestalling the usual cut-throat yanking of a series as soon as the ratings take a dive. Or whether the strike hurt the freshman show by interrupting the season and creating a general apathy in viewers regarding most new series. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know as it appears Bionic Woman may not be back for another season.
NBC has renewed Chuck and Life for full seasons next year, and it appears Heroes will return for a third outing of world-saving. None of these shows will be airing any new episodes in the remaining months of this season, but their producers will now have plenty of time to prepare fantastic episodes for next year.
