New shows this season, and it's been a very mixed results. Let's start with the biggest disappointment. Journeyman, CBS Monday night, this series started with a pilot episode that hit the figurative Grand Slam Homerun[/b] and has consistently never lived up to that standard since. The lead Kevin McKidd (HBO's Rome) is one of the best actors on TV right now, but the stories are consistently banal, trite and cliched.
Let's now consider Bionic Woman, NBC Wednesday nights. This was the series I had the highest hopes for because I loved the old series with Lindsay Wagner (right now I'd rather watch old reruns, and if the WGA strike continues as expected 1978 reruns are most likely what we'll be getting), and I was never a fan of Six Million Dollar Man. It's very easy to say the new series has not come close to living up to expectations. Katee Sackhoff's role as Sarah Corbus (the first Bionic subject) is clearly better written than the role of Jamie Summers (Michelle Ryan). The stories are not as meaty as they could be, and show has a definite tendency to turn into a melodrama about Jamie's love life or her home life with her sister. But I keep watching because I want to like it.
Now we come to Moonlight, CBS Friday nights, and it's the surprise of the lot. Each week this show is on it gets better and better. However, let's be clear this is not Angel the Series: beta 1.8, and if you're going to assess it using that criteria you'll probably not like it. Despite obvious narrative similarities Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin) is not Angel nor Spike; IMO, Mick is more similar to Nick Knight or Henry FitzRoy (but he's not a clone of those characters either). As a further comment on Mick St. John as a character he's rather like Thomas Magnum as a vampire. Well, the show continues to improve so I'm staying with it. BTW, Moonlight has Jason Doring (Veronica Mars's Logan Eccles) as a recuring guest star.
Done for now.
