Gough: New 'Smallville' Will Focus On Characters
Source: TV Guide
Whether you’re a fan of the Kryptonite mutants or not, it looks like they are in "Smallville" to stay. Although he’ll be getting a few flying lessons from cousin Kara (Laura Vandervoort), Clark (Tom Welling) won’t be taking to the skies any time soon.
What exactly will the series focus on? Well, in an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Al Gough confirmed that the seventh season will focus more on the characters of the series and might just include a few DC comic book moments.
Unfortunately, Clark Kent as a journalist won’t be part of the season line-up, however as viewers have already seen Lois Lane (Erica Durance) has already taken her first few steps toward her destiny as one of the world's greatest investigative journalists. Where this season the show will really excel is in the further development of the impossible dynamic of Clark, Lana (Kristen Kreuk) and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) …even if it means taking some more flak from fans.
"People are so invested in these characters," Gough said. “That’s the great thing about ‘Smallville’ fans - they are passionate about the show and the characters. Miles (Miller) and I take so much crap online for various decisions, and the fact is it makes me smile, because people still care. I think the fact that Lex and Lana divided so many people is a testament to that. It is the core triangle of the show, and the fact that it was on slow burn for five seasons just added to the furor."
Season 7 of the series will also bring along a few familiar faces from the Superman mythology, including Helen Slater (who played the movie adaptation of Supergirl) and Dean Cain (from "Lois and Clark"). Slater will once again be taking on the role of a Kryptonian in a few flashbacks of Lara-El’s visit to Earth in search of a new home for her young son. Caine will be taking on a darker role as Dr. Curtis Knox, a meteor freak with the ability to cure other meteor freaks.
The decision to include previous incarnations of the franchise originally began in the second season with the introduction of Terrence Stamp as Jor-El and the late Christopher Reeves as Virgil Swan. The Martian Manhunter (Phil Morris) and the Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) are both set to return to the show and a new comic book face is also on the cards for an appearance.
In amongst developing the characters of "Smallville,” one of the goals this year is to do the same to their alter egos, starting with Allison Mack who plays Chloe Sullivan. Mack will be going behind the camera to make her directorial debut for an as of yet unidentified episode and the entire cast are said to be thrilled with her decision.
"Allison is [directing an episode], and we are very excited," Gough continued. "Tom (Welling) will be directing again as well. Michael (Rosenbaum) wanted to, but he recently had back surgery and opted out. [Executive producer] Miles (Millar) and I have always been supportive of the actors directing, and think both Tom and Michael have given us great episodes. We expect the streak to continue with Allison."
