Have read a couple of threads on this now and I don't get it I really don't.
A movie has been proposed in the very early stages. there is as of yet no script, no cast, no director assigned, no budget set aside. In fact there is nothing and yet there are people doing everything short of wanting the Kuzui's lynched.
Joss created Buffy, absolutely no doubt of that. In an ideal world a Buffy movie would have him on board in at least a producer's capacity if not writer/director and with the cast we are now familiar with. But that creates problems. A film with that set up would ONLY be of interest to current fans of the show, as the casual viewer would rightly presume that if they had no knowledge of the show prior to the film they would be lost, and any film company has to think beyond a cult fanbase. It might sting to hear it, but they need to in order to make a movie viable.
But it is this oft heard cry of being disrespectful to Joss that I am sorry is completely OTT. Without a script or cast or director on board yet, how do you know the finished product won't be a stunning and respectful film that rather than push fans away, might get new fans that after seeing the film, may wish to check out the tv sereis to see what they were missing.
Joss is a human being and makes mistakes. Not all his films have been all that good. he is more than likely the best but that doesn't make him absolutely the best to reboot Buffy. There are many good scribes out there who could do a bang up job giving us a new Buffy.
The film could be the biggest waste of time ever, or it could be quite brilliant. but to call it disrepsectful to Joss and to say that you would boycott the film sounds excessive.
Wait and see what is actually being proposed. if it sounds like it'll be shit, then we can all turn round and sign petitions and make our feelings known. But until then, its too early to band around with unnecessary and illogical terms like Disrespectful.
