In Issue 3 of Angel: After the Fall, we discover that Angel is nowhuman. We learn this at the END of the issue. However, Angel still has supernatural strength. Otherwise he wouldn't be alive after his fight with Illyria. So, for fun, I am going through and pulling out some possible clues from the issue that MAY lead us to whether or not Angelhas been Shanshued.
PAGE 1:
Angel: The thing about Hell. It's kinda what you'd expect.Yes, it's hot. More humid than hot, really.
Do vampires feel heat? Can they be hot when they're not on fire? Since vampires are naturally cold, we don't really know the answers to these questions, but it's safe to say it's possible the only reason Angel can tell that Hell is humid is that he is human. However, we also don't know what Hell he is talking about. Most likely Hell-A, but it could also be a Hell dimension like the one he was in when Buffy killed him (BtVS,
2.22). POSSIBLY DID NOT STOP BEING A VAMPIRE UNTIL A WHILE AFTER LA's DESTRUCTION
Angel: ...the sun and the moon are out 24/7. Side by side... vampires feel a constant euphoria and that on-the-verge-of-bursting-into-flame feeling.
If the Shanshu prophecy was fulfilled the same night as "Not Fade Away," how would Angel know the feeling? Is it possible that him being human is the work of W&H, not The Powers That Be? Or could they have made him a different type of demon? Angel DOES NOT specifically say he is "human." He just says he's not a vampire. NOT NECESSARILY HUMAN
PAGE 3:
Illyria: "If I seperate your pieces and hurl them in different
directions, you will not return."
From this excerpt, we have reason to believe he is no longer a vampire. Illyria does not mention wood through the heart to make Angel "not return". NOT A VAMPIRE
Illyria: "You're half of what you were."
This obviously means he's not a vampire anymore, though at first read it sounds like she's just pissed. NOT A VAMPIRE
PAGE 4:
[Angel sees a dead security guard or police officer]
Angel: ...I'm seconds away from his fate.
This points to two things, although one is bigger than the other. 1) Vampires don't just die, they become completely non-existant. But a security guard's body doesnt turn to dust in seconds. Is Angel hinting death to him would now be that? A life-less body?... 2) The thought that Angel may be invulnerable now had come to me. But after reading this, it's clear he still can be killed, and it would only take Illyria to do it. NOT INVULNERABLE
PAGE 6:
Baby Angel: Dark, warm gone.
Now, my thoughts here could be ENTIRELY wrong, and probably are. But babies don't understand the things we understand, yet they can see so much more such as spirits and ghosts (according to Sylvia Browne and other psychics). So, I believe its possible Brian Lynch has used the baby's though process to tell us something important later. I had an idea, but it became very confusing and I eventually proved my theory, of what is being said, wrong. Does anyone else have some theories for this one?
PAGE 7:
Spike: "That stance he's been forced into is far too symbolic for a bottom-feeder like him."
This is the one piece of information making me think he is still
somewhat a vampire. Wouldn't "bottom-feeder" mean he still won't eat humans but he still needs what humans can give him? Why would Spike call someone with a human appetite a "bottom-feeder"? That, and the stance he's in resembles that of Jesus on the cross. STILL A VAMPIRE
SECOND TO LAST AND LAST PAGE:
Angel: ...a vamp can still mend quickly.Which, of course, would mean somuch more...if I were still a vampire.
NOT A VAMPIRE!
OTHER THEORIES
Is it possible the reason Illyria is so against Angel is because he hasbeen made a higher-class demon? That wouldn't explain why it takes himso long to heal.
