ummm... it was original, i'll give you that... i watched it 2 months before i started watching Buffy with my then-girlfriend who is also a buffy-fan. and i remember thinking... god if this is what the show's gonna be like, then i'm not gonna watch it... i didn't hate it, but i didn't love it.
now, i have found a new appreciation for it (but i'm very biased now). and i mean it was Joss' first try and it was pretty good considering just that.

When I first saw the movie I liked it. However, This was before I saw the tv show in it's entirety. I feel as though instead of making a vampire slayer seem like an important, dangerous, and life distructing job, They make it comical. Yes, It's a comedy. But she's a vampire slayer. Slayers usually have the life expectancy of 25 if that. I don't see anything funny about that. I just think it was too cheesy and too unrealistic. The show is 10x more realistic, and it's 100% more relateable.
In the movie Buffy is potrayed as a bone head cheerleader. But in the tv show, She may be peppy and preppy but she isn't an idiot. The movie also potrayed her as someone who would have wanted to be friends with people more along the lines of Cordelia, Whereas in the show, Buffy goes straight to Willow, and chooses to be friends with more down to earth people.
Like I said, The show was more relatable and more realistic. I just didn't really like the movie. It's okay for what it is, But I'm not going to do summersalts over it.
Don't get me wrong. There are parts of the movie that I do like. But not many!
The sad thing is, The people who did the first movie want to do another movie..With none of the original actors or anything. It's going to suck. Maybe even more than the first one. Yikes!

I agree with you entirely about her intelligence in the movie and was very happy to see that out heroine had something going down in the brains department as well on tv. However, I'm not sure if the issue about friends can be seen as a problem. After all, didn't Buffy choose friends like Willow and Xander in the series because of the experiences with popular friends that she'd had in L.A., and in the movie?

That's true. I see your point there. You learn from past experiences. Maybe it's just that I didn't really like her friends. I just think the movie lacked alot. They could have done so much with it!

Excommunicated, I'll have to live out the rest of my days wearing the cone of shame, defanged, chipped, without slayery strength...seriously, I could go on and on... until the original Buffy movie plays on basic cable some random 4am weeknight, or loads in my netflix queue. In all seriousness though, it's totally one of those things I keep meaning to get around to watching but never do. I will though...eventually

I love the movie. I think it's a great comedy. But I don't at all associate it with the show, to me they are 2 totally different things. I totally agree. I love the movie. I love campy movies like that though. Stuff like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hedwig and the Angry Inch I love movies like that. They make me laugh. The absurdity of them all is just so great! They make me so happy! I also agree that the movie and the show are two completely different things. Had Whedon been in control of the script, I would consider it a part of the show, but since he wasn't I don't think it is.

To this day I'm still amazed that we got two amazing Tv shows from one bad movie. In my opinion there's nothing good about the movie.

I was entertained by the movie. It was pretty absurd, but sometimes that's okay.

This is going to sound crazy but.... I never saw the movie. (gasps) Wow, this forum is like going to confession. So guys, I went and bought the movie today. It was some double feature special with the original Buffy movie coupled with an old Melissa Joan Hart film called "Drive Me Crazy" (another movie I haven't seen... Mark Metcalf is in it! Wow!) I'll watch it this weekend... think I'll like it?

I like the series better than the movie. The movie went to fast and I couldn't follow it, so in my opinion I think it was a lame movie.

I don't like the move. The series is so much better, in alot of ways. My dad is the one who got me into Buffy and told me that Joss didn't get to do the movie like he wanted. So that's probably why it sucks.

I first saw the movie like 4 years ago, shortly after the TV show ended. I really found it lame I bought it on DVD two weeks ago and watched it and, hey that's a funny little movie. Sure, it's a godd concept/bad execution movie, but it has some pretty funny bit and it's a good first draft for the show. My favorite part is when Buffy is fighting Lothos and shedraws out a cross and he put it on fire saying: "Is that your greatest weapon" And then she grabs her hairspray bottle and says "No, it's my keen fashion sense" and put him on fire. Awesome.
I also liked the character of Pike. Probably more stable than any other boyfriend Buffy ever had in the show. However, I have to ask, I am the only one who tought that Pike really looked like Spike sometimes? Some facial expressions, some gestures, even his leather coat, reminded me of Spike.
Also, I want to know: How much of the movie is canon? I know Merrick is canon, but what about Pike? Or Lothos?
