My mom recently asked me to go outside and put some stakes up around a plant. I was like ok fine, and I let the obvious Buffy reference pass. But when my mom finally wanted me to do it she goes, " Go outside and stake". For one brief moment I was like " YES!!! Now I am Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!! Vampires beware!" So my question is: Has BTVS ever gotten mixed up slightly with your regular life?

lol, that's pretty good.
i dunno if it's ever happened to me. I was sitting in computer class making an Oz banner with photoshop, when our substitute came up behind me and leane din real close to my ear and was like "Buffy fan?" in a really creepy seductive kind of voice. i was like "yeah." but i was internally freaking out.

Tangentially speaking, I can say that I had some... interesting subs in high school. On the topic here, being that I am a linguistics major, my favorite part about the show is the slang and wordplay present in the writing, which inevitably sinks into my real-life manner of speaking. One of my best friends also calls me "the real life Xander". (I don't know what she's talking about, I don't wear an eyepatch! )

I use a lot of lines from the show in every day life. My mother thinks it's strange.

Hmm...the "real life" Buffy reference that sticks out the most in my memory was back in 1998. I had a World Civ teacher in high school, who was the biggest hardass in the school. He was in his 50's, and ran his high school class like a college course (the difference was he assigned massive amounts of homework). He was extremely uptight and kind of looked like Quentin Travers.
I remember one Tuesday, he didn't assign any homework, which was a major surprise. He said it was because it was a very important episode of Buffy, and he didn't want to have anyone miss it because of him.

My 7th-grade science teacher (who had to be about 50) used to walk around the room as he taught, and stand behind the girls and massage their shoulders. They all thought he was a great big perv (probably a good call), but somehow no one ever reported him. Kinda wish they had, 'cause I had him again for chem 2 years later. It was getting late in the school year, and I knew I was in big danger of not passing the class, so when he offered extra credit projects for anyone who thought they needed 'em, I took every one I could get. He gave me good marks on all of them... and then failed me by 1 friggin' point. Whoa. Seriously off-topic...

Go that guy! ;D I remember in year 8 I had to make up a speech about anything random to ramble on about and I decided to do mine on Buffy. I rambled on for a bit about characters and the point of it and etc. Regrettably, I claimed that Anthony Stewart Head was american (This was before I was a big fan okay, leave me alone) and little did I know, my teacher knew of him. So, anyways, when I finished my English teacher whispered for me to come up to her desk. There were other people still speaking, speeching at the time so i figured it mustve been important, anyways, when I got there she goes "The actor who plays Giles is English." and she winked at me. I tried to reply but she shushed me and sent me back to my seat. I always liked her but that made me love her. Not in a creepy way. Lol ANYWAYS, the point is, I love finding out about closet Buffy fans! Also, I think (including teachers and myself) there are 5 people in my school of 1000+ students who are familiar with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.... saaaaad, sad, sad. *shakes head slowly and shamefully)

When I was waiting for my sister to finish tennis I decided to help this dad out because his kids were more or less going nuts. So I'm playing catch with the daughter and talking to the dad about big teenage fads and I said to him "Just wait till your daughter wants to read twilight" (she was 7) And he replied " oh yeah, I've heard of that. I'm not really that interested in the entire thing. What I actually really love is Buffy the vampire slayer." To which I replied " OH MY GOD! I love Buffy the vampire slayer!" it was a weird moment. Some girl behind us rolled her eyes and gave us this disgusted look. I was tempted to yell at her.

As for me, I make up words because of Buffy or add "y"'s to words.

I constantly refer to my group of friends as scoobies and they know why! And now even those in my group who don't like Buffy call us the scoobies! I get msgs like "Wanna have a scoobie night soon" and "Scoobies were awesome last night" (When we have a good one!) hahaha. It's so awesome.
Also last year I found out my Screen Study lecture was a massive Buffy fan! And Whedon in general it seems - She used firefly opening sequence for examples of genre hybridity, and Buffy ep. Superstar opening to show how cult texts can play within themselves! She also used Buffy Fan Vids to some Beetles songs to show fan-interaction!
I wrote my last essay on Buffy and made a Cult TV blog, she loved it! It was so fun to go talk to her about Buffy stuff as she would get so excited... she constantly made Buffy references and said things like ".... just like in Buffy" when applying the stuff we were learning in the lecture (with 300 people) and in our tutorials (with 15 peope)!

My Director of Studies at Cambridge was a huge Buffy fan (big surprise being a Social Anthropologist who specialised in Gender Studies...). I would have supervisions at her house and there were always Buffy VHS everywhere in the living room. I seriously doubt she ever watched anything else!

That teach story about the no homework is beyond cool! I always add -y to the end of words, and I quote Buffy, a lot. Whenever I see something during my lectures that could be Buffy-like, I make a joke and then no one gets it, but I somehow deal! I had a professor my last year at my old university, and she was such a surprising Buffy fan. I went up to see her in office hours one day, and low and behold, I walked into Spuffy paradise! My professor had, in her office: - 1 Spike big cutout, 1 Buffy big cutout -The box of Buffy lollipops -The coffin box that holds special trading cards -Walls plastered with Russian/Polish editions of the Buffy magazine(she was my Russian prof) -Spike and Buffy action figures -The OMWF poster on her door -A picture of her cut out and put next to a picture of James Marsters. Needless to say, I took 2 more of her classes. The first was a Sci-Fi foreign lit class, and she managed to work in 2 episodes of Firefly into the mix. The second was a Vampire: Blood and Tradition class. We watched 3 episodes of Buffy: Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest(I count as one), Lie to Me, and Buffy vs. Dracula. Needless to say, she was my favorite professor, ever.

That is so cool that you got to take a course on vampires! I wish my college offered something like that. It's amazing how the legend has stuck with us through time and changed with each generation.

i have a stake that i whittled myself if that counts. i talk like Buffy CONSTANTLY and quote the show a lot. as for posters, i don't have any, but i have the 2008/09 and 2009/10 calendars, and the 2008 one i took it apart and hung all the pictures on my walls, and i plan to do that with my other one once 2009 is over. i also have a bunch of Harry Potter and Pirates of teh Caribbean Posters, and a wand and a pirate sword. walking into my room, it's easy to see my three obsessions automatically.

In my college English Lit course I wrote a paper on Buffy. It had to be a drama piece and I chose the Restless episode. Most people chose to write about either a play or movie, but I went to my professor and asked him if I could focus on Buffy, and it turns out he was cool with the idea. Being an English professor he said he was familiar with Buffy's impact in the literary and academic culture. He said that he would be very interested to read my essay and he commended me for choosing to go a different route with my paper. I was the only one in the class to focus on an episode of television, instead of a play or thematic work. But I have always believed that Buffy is a form of TV literature, and an episode like Restless, so rife with theme and metaphor was just perfect for the assignment. Of course, I made an A!
This other time during a public speaking course in college, the assignment was to speak about a celebrity or someone that meant something to us. I of course, choose Joss Whedon. Much to my dismay, however, no one in my class knew who I was talking about. When I told my professor who I'd chosen for the topic he said, "Who?" You must understand though that I hail from a small town where probably nobody was familiar with Buffy, Angel, or any of Joss' works. It's sad really. Boy, did those kids not know what they were missing. I felt sorry for them. I can only hope that by now, they have stumbled onto the greatness that is Joss Whedon!

i've always talked with -y on the end of words when there wasn't another way to describe something, so that was nothing new for me while watching Buffy one of the english teachers at my school has a husband who has a big Buffy cutout i think a few of the english teachers were familiar with Buffy i remember walking into my media class and started having a "Angel vs. Buffy" conversation with a guy in there, then one of the english teachers came in, and joined us
