What if 'Angel' was never created? I think she was still in Buffy untill the last episode and the character Anya never returned in season 4...

I still think they would of killed her off... by season 5, and she would never have grown as much as she did and would have just died a human and never became a higher being..

I actually think Cordelia moving to Angel was a good thing for the character. She got a chance to grow and change and we as an audience got the pleasure of seeing Cordy in a wide variety of stories, many of which were about her. On BTVS Cordelia was regulated to the role of comic relief, the person among the scoobies to call them out on their flaws. By the end of season 3 Cordelia was rarely seen, only popping up to deliver a well timed insult and then off she went. I have a feeling things would have gotten worse if she stayed. I do know the show used Spike & Anya to fill the Cordelia void, but they were completely different characters with lots of backstory to explore.
So if Cordelia had stayed, she would have continued to pop in from time to time, perhaps have an episode and brief story centered around her and then by the end of Season 4 she would have been written off and never heard from again, although probably mentioned here and there. Spike probably would have still been brought back to replace Oz and fill the guy quota, but Anya would have been forgotten and at some point another female would show up to play Xander's love interest. And to add to the pain, Harmony might have never been heard from post Season 5 of Buffy. All in all that scenario sounds bad...I'm glad it didn't go down like that.

I agree that Cordelia would've been in the season 4 to either be written off or killed. I don't think it would interfere with Anya's storyline though. Xander and Cordelia were obviously not a couple anymore, and in the first few episode commentaries with Anya, the writers stated that they didn't intend at all for Anya to be a recurring character. They said they just wanted her back.... and back... and back.. and back... until about a quarter of the way through the fourth season they could call her recurring. Lol. It had nothing to do about having a new love interest for Xander.. and they stated that. They just liked the character. Anya would still be on the show in season 4, but maybe her relationship with Xander wouldn't develop as fast and he would have to choose. Idk, that's my theory.

Cordelia would be very superflous after high school. She plays a very important role as the popular bitca at Sunnydale High. There's far less need for that role to continue after Season 3, so I think she would have been side-lined if she hadn't moved to L.A. It's hard to imagine her staying in Sunnydale. The others stay for the mission, which Cordy doesn't have yet, so why she would remain in tiny Sunnydale is anybody's guess.

Thorn, can I ask why you're so attached to the concept of Cordelia as a higher being? You're always talking about the Powers That Be and reiterating Cordy's status as a higher being. Why does it matter so much to you? Personally, I think Cordelia had a lot more interesting storylines and personal growth across the two shows, becoming a higher being was just a small part of her character.

Paul, you just have to let it be. We've all come to accept Thorn's obsession and fascination over Higher-being Cordy.... even though the rest of us thought her being one was pretty dull and led to her worst storyline ever. No offense, Thorn

Turning into a Higher Being isn't what made Cordelia such a wonderful character. It's actually a very small part of her journey, if you ask me. She grew as a character, because she really wanted to help. Her being a Higher Being shouldn't really effect how we see her. She's still that awesome character she was before. I even have my doubts that she is a Higher Being.

I think if Cordelia had stayed in Sunnydale she wouldn't have achieved the immense personal growth that she did over on Angel. Yeah, it would have been cool to see her stick around a bit longer, but as others here have said, I'm glad that it worked out the way it did. On Angel, we got to see Cordy in a whole new light, and she really grew and developed as a person. It was a real treasure watching her journey on Angel over the years. I wouldn't trade that for anything. Besides, had she stayed in Sunnydale we might not have ever gotten Anya, whom I love. And if Cordelia had stayed in Sunnydale, what would she have done? Continued to work at the dress shop while the others were going off to college? All and all, I think things turned out for the best. On Angel we got to see Cordelia transform from a shallow, superficial young girl concerned about money and status, etc., into a young woman who really cared for and wanted to help others at great personal cost. Sure, we got to see the beginnings of this over on Buffy. Even from the very first season we know that there was more to Cordelia than just caring about clothes, makeup, and the popular crowd, but it is over on Angel that Cordelia's personal growth really flourished. I for one am glad we got taken on that ride. I think from the beginning a part of Cordelia knew she was destined for bigger and better things. Even in the first episode of Buffy she proclaims that she would "kill to live in LA..." So, I believe Cordy was always supposed to end up there, it just turned out to be for a lot more than she was capable of imagining at the time.

Rude, joking.. Off-Topic but the only reason I like her as a Higher Being is because it is better than her just being dead. I also think it led to her worst storyline ever, but she living on as one is better than her just being dead, (for me anyway) but that is not at all why I think she is a wonderful character... (I have liked her since 1997 andwe have only been told she has become one in 2007?..) Never said that becoming a higher being was a big part of her character, just a good way to honour the character with her exit from the show ... that's really it. My 'obsession and fascination' with wanting somthing good come out of somthing really bad.

She wouldn't have grown so much I think, but she may not have had the horrible story she got in season 4 and the latter half of 3.

I can only wish for Cordy to have stayed on Buffy, but that's just because I'm a fan of Xander/Cordelia. I honestly think Anya took Cordy's spot as far as being a love interest for Xander not character wise. Then again it did make more since for her character to hurry and get the heck out of Sunnydale.

I'm really glad that Cordy left Buffy. As it's been stated, it would be rather superfluous to have Cordy on Buffy, unforch. I did miss her wittiness and bitca-ness at times, but she didn't fit into the group anymore. I like the way that they resolved her storyline at the end of the season, especially with all of the gang sitting, watching the school burn.
I enjoyed her character on Buffy, but never really liked her as much as the others. When she was on Angel, however, I was amazed at how much of an intense and fascinating character she became. She was brave and selfless, of which we would've never seen on Buffy, as her character was in a stasis.
Good on Cordy moving to Angel, I say.

Interestingly, Cordelia's age in Angel seems to catch up very quickly to CC's actual age. Considering that she's really only meant to be 21 in Season 3 of Angel, she acts emotionally much more like someone in their late 20s/early 30s and her character always contrasts quite a bit with how the Scoobies are still acting in Buffy at the same time. All of her close friends are older in Angel as well (think Angel, Wesley, Fred, Lorne, not sure about Gunn) so it makes sense to close that gap when your actress is actually entering her 30s. If they had kept Cordelia in Buffy, they'd have had to carry on the pretense that she was about 8 years younger than CC...

Just curious: what on earth could Cordelia accomplish by staying in Sunnydale? All her parents' assets were seized, so she has no money to go to any of the schools she got accepted to, and somehow I doubt she applied to UC Sunnydale as a safety. Would she be like Xander? Anya? Giles even? Just lounging around in Season Four? I'm curious to know what you think

Maybe continued to aid the scoobies in the fight? It's hard to say. Either way, I think it's best that her character moved over to Angel because it really afforded her a chance to shine and showed that she was capable of so much more. Something I never really understood about Cordy's story though. She claimed that she could not go to any of the schools that accepted her because of the tax fraud her parents committed. So she just gives up on the idea of higher education all together? What about financial assistance for school? Surely something would have been available to her. And it was implied that she did well on the SAT's and made pretty decent grades, what about a scholarship? Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I just think it's unfortunate that she didn't explore her options more. If she'd really wanted to go to college, she would have found a way. And I think it was important to her given that she seemed bummed about being accepted into some great schools and then not being able to go. Which I think is why she was so snarky toward the others, because of that bitterness she felt. Obviously, her character wanted to be an actress, so the whole college journey was not really part of her story (Joss and co had bigger plans for her), but thinking about it from a real life perspective, it is a sad situation.

from the Buffy perspective: no real change. Cordelia didn't really influence her life a whole lot.
from the Cordelia perspective: i think Birthday best explains it. "Cordy" starring Cordelia Chase.
