This always bugs me. There's probably a simple answer to this simple question, but I really am confused. She IS in high school, but not THE high school but WHAT high school?

I think that it's meant to be the reopening of Sunnydale High - in the same location and with the same name.

Maybe they had another high school in a town nearby she and the other Sunnydale students had to go too until Sunnydale High reopened.

Did they say it was high school that she was attending in Season 5? Or was it ever said? May have been middle school/junior high.

Yeah I figured she was still in 8th grade in Season 5, since in the Buffyverse, high school is usually ages 15-18.

Yeah I figured she was still in 8th grade in Season 5, since in the Buffyverse, high school is usually ages 15-18. I think she's in 9th grade during Season 5. DAWN: Yeah? Those monks put grades K through eight in my head. Can't we just wait and see if they drop nine in there too? - Tough Love So during Season 5, she already has completed 8th grade and is in the middle of 9th grade wondering if the knowledge will just magically appear. Or from another perspective, when the monks created Dawn post-Restless, they dropped K through 8th grade in her head. She's already done with 8th grade by the time Season 5 starts.

In my experience, it goes -
Kindergarten - 5th grade - Elementary School 6th - 8th grade - Middle School 9th - 12 grade - High School
But there are some "Junior High Schools" that are 7th - 9th grade. It sounds like that's where Dawn went to school.
They could have changed the grades for "Junior High" and "High School" because of Sunnydale High blowing up. Maybe temporarily redistricting or even making a Middle School include grades 6-9 and making another school have grades 10-12 until Sunnydale High was rebuilt.

Ah, I've actually read the original post properly now and understand the question. Sorry about my irrelevant post above. I always thought she was meant to be in Middle School. But the quote above from "Tough Love" certainly seems to suggest otherwise....

We actually see Dawn's school in S5, from when Buffy went to go get her and tell her that their mom had died. So... what about Season 6? That's gonna be 10th grade, then, so did they say where she was going? I seem to recall Buffy giving Dawn a thrashing for skipping school or flunking out of class or somesuch, so she had to be going somewhere. Man, I need to really rewatch the last 3 seasons. I feel like I'm forgetting everything. Btw, where I went to high school (I'm in the US, btw), junior high was grades 7-9 and high school was 10-12. (I was going to go to Central High School... yes, the one famous from the 1950's) However, after I was done with 9th grade, my mom put me in a private high school, and theirs started at grade 9. Only I was already done with 9th, so I entered on grade 10.

Isn't there a clip of Dawn at school in season six also? When she goes to see Anyas friend Halfric who is supposed to be a counsillor?

Love that episode. Except for the Dawn-parts. I like her more when she's less whiney, more confident.

I hate her tantrums.

There was also the episode in S6 where Dawn takes Buffy bot to school with her (guess it was bring your parent to school day or something).

I'm fanwanking that the UC Sunnydale campus allowed the high school students to use part of their campus until their new high school was built. So that's where Dawn was.
