But also isn't Ballard THE most boring Joss character ever created. Urgh. Very much agreed. I can barely pay attention everytime he is on screen because I just want to punch him in the face. Love Dollhouse to death, but this character is just boring and creepy.

Hmm, I don't find Paul that bad of a character. If anything, Boyd is my least favorite Dollhouse character so far.

No way, Ballard is so bad, like one facial expression. It would be so stupid if Caroline and him ended up together, because he is sooo boring she would go into a coma.

I think things will get much more exciting in season 2, after all the clues we had on Epitaph One. Anyways, he is kinda boring (he's like Fox Mulder but not that cool and funny).
About Echo, I think it's a pretty damn good episode. It has the noir, conspiracy feeling that obviously doesn't fit with Fox's idea of an action Alias-esque show. It's more like La Femme Nikita's vibe.
Curiously, the original Firefly pilot also had much less action, but when Joss did it again, it ended up amazing. In DH's case, it feels like Joss wrote the second pilot without the inspiration he had while writing Echo. Too bad I can't pretend Echo is canon, 'cause it's totally different from the original pilot...

So yeah, as expected this episode is a lot better than Ghost and most other episodes. Everything just makes a lot more sense in Echo than in Ghost: the Actives and characters. It sucks that some of the stuff wasn't touched on out of all 13 episodes. It would have been interesting to see how the showed played out from here. Ghost threw us right in the middle of everything just like Echo, but Echo did it better. I really don't understand why FOX wanted something new. The mythology started out earlier, but really, it was no different than Ghost... only better. Much better.
Still, I'm more than happy with where Dollhouse ended up.

I just finished watching it and I have to say this was loads times better than the one FOX showed. I would have loved to see the show continue on from this.
What I was hoping was that I would be able to show my friends THIS episode as the opener when I watch with them on DVD instead of the six semi-mediocre episodes and then go from Echo into Man on the Street. I guess I won't be able to do that because the Ballard in the hospital doesn't really work well going into Man on the Street as well as Echo saying "Caroline" in bed at the end which is the ending to the season...so...haha!

I just got the dvd today and I watched this episode. OMG. I'm extremely upset this wasn't used as the first episode. Not only is the story so much more better than "Ghost", but it explains the Dollhouse and it's engagements a lot more as well.

This episode really did an amazing job explaining the Dollhouse, actives, engagements etc. Not sure what FOX was smoking when they thought it would be confusing. Also loved how much was just in this one episode, that took us 3-4 regular series episodes to find out. Pretty neat.

And re-watching Echo... it just gets better each time, there's a wonderful amount of material, small moments - character interactions... and the preformances of Ballard and Echo make more sense and seem more fully rounded, hell Echo even gets to change personality and not just skill sets! The intro montage sequence is great and Adelle's sales pitch mapped on top of the elements (such as the final hospital scene)... And there's humour! oh i love it. But then i always did. This isn't just a good pilot - it's one of the best episodes of the season (IMHO) whereas Ghost is, uh, not so much...

I just thought this episode was okay, but it definitely does a better job explaining the role of the Dollhouse. But I could see why they didn't use this as the pilot because they had a lot of story lines that they wanted to extend over many episodes. Like the whole Ballard/Caroline story. Also, it definitely seemed like they used this epi for spare parts.
Ballard-- eh, I'm not really that much of a fan. Though I liked his relationship with Mellie. Boyd is one of my favorites though.

i thought they were extended very slowly with the first episodes imagine all the more stuff we could of had happening if they followed this unaired pilot

I'm really disappointed that I can't just ignore episodes 1-5 and watch this in their place I'd love to chop and screw and remake the season based on this. It's quite depressing to see how much plot we would could have had, but obviously FOX tested this with a group of gerbils and PE teachers and decided no-one would follow. I think I liked Boyd more in "Ghost", but he was the only character that resonated for me in it. I've always liked Ballard, but I realise that it's mostly based on a massive misconception on my part. When I watched "Ghost", I somehow knew Victor was an active, and also thought Ballard knew that too. I thought he was fucking with the guy cause he knew he'd be someone else soon enough and I thought that was so badass. I was completely off though lol

I was wondering if "Lubov" was actually Lubov until the final scene? I mean, maybe he got to know the Dollhouse and volunteered, as he said before. Or has he been a doll all the time?
