Pairing/Characters: Buffy, Lara Croft

Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Action, Violence
Word Count: 1414
Author's Note: Quick Lara background:
At the age of 9, Lara Croft and her mother survived a plane crash in the Himalayas. Deep within the mountains, Lara found an ancient device and activated it. Trying to protect her daughter, Lara watched as the device made her mother disappear. After being rescued, she joined her father on excavations around the world for ancient artifacts/devices in hopes of finding out what happened to her mother. After her father's mysterious death, Lara inherited everything and continues to pick up where her father left off.
Buffy crashed through the stone wall and yelled in pain as she hit the ground hard. She always knew she was klutz, even with all the strength and skill, but falling through a trap door and sliding down a steep dirt incline while on patrol was a first. The dirt and dust started to settle and Buffy coughed. The sudden brightness hurt her eyes and they blurred for a moment before coming into focus. She sat up, wanting to get a good look of where exactly she was and how to get out, but the gun pointed directly between her eyes kind of obstructed that.
"Who the hell are you?" demanded a female, British voice.
"Ok, you wanna get that thing out of my face?" Buffy asked harshly.
The pistol whipped across her face and blood started to drip from her mouth. "Who-the-hell are you?"
Buffy didn't have time for this,. She quickly grabbed the hand holding the gun and squeezed down. As it fell to the floor, Buffy let go and jumped up, sending her foot into the air, but the woman lept backwards into a flip, evading it. Buffy ran after her, only to have a second gun pressed against her forehead.
"Do that again, and I will kill you." she slowly backed up, gun still pointed at Buffy's head. "Let's try this again, shall we? Who are you?"
"Buffy." she sighed, it's not like she had a choice. "Are you human?"
"Are you?"
"I asked you first."
"Yes, but see, I have this gun. At the moment, I'm inquiring, you're answering."
Buffy stared hard, she wanted to get back to Dawn quickly. "Yeah, I am." She paused for a sec, "I think."
"Any weapons?"
"I've known you fifteen seconds and I find that question funny." Buffy quickly reached into her jacket -
The woman pointed the gun down and a gunshot rang out, sparks flying at Buffy's feet, and she quickly raised the gun to her head again. "Slowly..."
The noise caused Buffy to jump back, heart racing. She thought she was dead for a second. Cautiously reaching back into her jacket, Buffy withdrew a wooden stake and held it in front of her. "Happy?"
"A stake? You wouldn't happen to be a..."
"Vampire Slayer." Buffy finished. "That'd be me."
The woman lowered her gun and placed into one of the holsters at her side. "I heard there was one here. If I didn't have other things running through my mind, I'd say this was an honor." She walked by Buffy and picked up her other gun, putting it in the other holster.
A confused look crossed Buffy's face, "That's it? Threatening me, nearly kill me... and now we're best buds?" She turned around and looked at the woman. "Gotta name?"
"Lara Croft. And yes, I'm human."
Buffy shrugged. "Can't say I've heard of you."
Lara smirked. "Just the way I like it."
"You know, I don't mean to sound prejudice, but what is it with you people? Giving me orders, following me around, and now held at gunpoint. Can't British people just be civil?"
"I was." Lara was studying a wall instead of looking at Buffy.
It wasn't until now that Buffy could actually see her surroundings. The room was a long corridor, and everything from the walls, to the floor and ceiling, seemed to be lined with gold, except for one stone section at one end where Buffy fell through, she didn't notice the large stone statue next to the opening until now. It was sitting down, arms and legs crossed, mouth wide open. Six gold coffins were against the walls, three on each side. Torches lined the walls, causing the room to be illuminated with a gold and orange glow. On the farthest side, there was an altar.
"Wow. What is this place?" Buffy asked.
"Meet the Tomb of some of Moctezuma's follower's." Lara answered, still studying one of the walls.
"Cool." Buffy said. "Who's that?"
"Americans." Lara whispered to herself before turning to Buffy. "Moctezuma was an Aztec emperor." she answered.
"Why is this in California? Weren't the Aztec's big with the Mexico thing?"
"Moctezuma found some artifacts that were dangerous, both mythological and supernatural. To keep them away from the general public, he ordered many of his followers to make rooms like this all over the western coast, to guard these artifacts and to make sure they are never found. And good thing he did. Who knows what would've happened if Cortez got his hands on them."
"And what happened to his followers?"
"Sacrificed themselves in hopes it'd help keep this place guarded. Hence the coffins."
Buffy walked around a bit. "So why are you down here?"
"I'm looking for one of these artifacts, and according to one of my Father's journals, it's here. At the 'Boca del Infierno'."
"Seriously? After what you just told me? I'm not just gunna let you take something if it's 'dangerous' for whatever reason: money or evil."
"Neither. It could help me find someone."
Buffy didn't expect that. "Who?"
Lara glared at her. "That'd be my business."
Buffy didn't like this. There were much more important things running through her mind, like Dawn and Glory, and she would rather not be here, but this was too suspicious. "How did you get down here, anyways?
"My own way. The less stumbling and crashing through way." She turned around and went back to looking around, the long braid draped over her shoulder.
"You're not the sharing type."
"I'm a private person."
"And how do you expect to find this thing?"
"There's always a way. Now you can stop with the questions for a minute so I can figure out how to find this thing."
"Sure thing. I mean, you're the one with the guns." Buffy walked over to one of the gold coffins and sat on it. Her weight pushed the coffin down and it made a 'click' noise. "What just happened?"
Lara looked down the corrider and saw a small artifact rise from the altar. "Well Buffy, it looks like you just solved my problem."
Suddenly, two long blades came out of slits on both walls and started racing towards the two of them. Buffy jumped off the coffin. Together, Buffy and Lara raced at them. Lara dove over them as Buffy rolled under. The blades disappeared into the walls just as wooden spikes dropped down from holes in the ceiling. Both quickly dodged and the spikes rose back up.
"They really don't want people to get this thing, huh?" Buffy asked.
"It'd be boring otherwise."
They both walked over to the altar, looking down at the artifact. It was gold, but looked small and light. A warrior kneeled in front of a large circle with his arms stretched out.
"What does it do?" Buffy asked, looking at Lara.
Lara didn't take her eyes of the artifact. "If activated properly, it will produce a sphere that allows the person to look through all kinds of different dimensions. A looking glass of sorts." She went to go pick it up, but Buffy grabbed her arm.
"Are you crazy? Again, after what you told me and now with the traps... This isn't ment to be found."
Lara towered over Buffy. "I will kill you for it."
"Just tell me who you're looking for!" Buffy demanded.
"... My mother."
Buffy let go of her arm. All it took was that one word. Just one month ago, Buffy's mother passed away, and for these few moments she totally escaped Buffy's mind. It made her feel guilty.
"Take it." Buffy said.
Lara took her backpack off, picked up the artifact, and placed it in. They both looked at each for a second and smiled softly. The crunching noise in the background made them slowly turn their heads and look down the corridor. They watched as the large stone statue slowly started to stand up, spear in hand, and march towards them.
"One more obstacle?" Buffy asked.
"Hopefully there'll be a few more." Lara said. Pistols already in her hands, she ran at the statue, blasting it in the face and neck with many bullets, causing pieces of stone to breakaway, but the statue didn't slow. Lara slid down and slipped between its legs, finishing off the rounds.
Buffy wasn't far behind as she lept off her feet and bounced off one of the coffins, spinning in the air and using all her force to kick the statue in the face. The spear barely missed her, and she made contact, knocking the head off as it crumbled to the ground.
The entire room started to shake and started to break apart. "Looks like you got your wish." Buffy yelled to Lara. "How about we get out of here now."
"Think you can keep up?" Lara smiled.
"You bet I can."
