OK, so from Season 5 onward, Buffy's (and everyone else's) recollections of Season 1-4 events are at least a little different from the way we saw them, thanks to the insertion of Dawn into their memories.
Can you think of any episodes that might have unfolded differently in their altered memories due to Dawn's presence? Or would it just be a matter of sometimes there's a little sister hanging around in the background, and Giles doesn't say the "Living with someone isn't easy, especially for an only child" line when Buffy complains about her roommate?
Most S1-4 episodes didn't have all that much to do with Buffy's home life, so we can probably guess that those wouldn't have changed much. But I wonder what role Dawn would play in the "new" versions of episodes like "Ted," "Dead Man's Party," "Band Candy," or even "Who Are You?"

The comic book "False Memories'' addresses this, and shows how previous events were changed by Dawn's presence:
Dawn helped Xander revive Buffy in "Prophecy Girl". In "Innocence", Angelus captures Dawn in the hallway. Willow tries to save her and gets captured instead. Also, Dawn catches Xander and Cordy together instead of Willow, although this happens differently to "Innocence".
Also, the comic "Slayer, Interupted" shows that Dawn was responsible for Buffy getting sent to a mental hosptial before Sunnydale. She read her diary and told Hank and Joyce. Since Dawn never existed, it's possible the asylum was a false memory too.
As for other episodes, let me guess...
"Ted" - Dawn would eat the cookies and love Ted. But she'd know he was a robot by the end of the episode, unlike Joyce. "Dead Man's Party" - At the party, probably following Xander around. Would need rescuing from the zombies. "Band Candy" - Probably being babysat at the library by Willow, Oz, etc. "Who Are You" - Held hostage, probably gave Faith some backchat like Joyce did. Would explain the resentment in "Dirty Girls".

Dawn helps Xander revive Buffy? Please tell me there's a convincing explanation, and we're not expected to believe that he just decided to drag a 10-year-old into the Master's cave with him.
So, in the post-Dawn Buffyverse, did Buffy's family find out about the slayage a lot earlier?

Xander didn't bring Dawn, she followed Buffy on her own (probably thinking she could help in some way) and Xander and Angel found her cradling Buffy's body. Xander still did the CPR, but Dawn was next to him as he did it. Dawn read Buffy's diary before Sunnydale. Joyce and Hank dismiss Buffy as crazy, but Dawn believes her and therefore knew everything all through seasons one and two. Joyce didn't accept the truth until "Becoming, Part Two". None of these comics are canon, btw.

It's interesting to think about how things would have been different had Dawn been around in the earlier seasons. That's one reason I was so looking forward to the animated series, it would have given us an opportunity to see what those early years would have been like with Dawn present. It's fun to speculate though, and I think Paul is pretty spot on.

Other episodes I would like to know the "Dawn included" version of:
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered": I suppose Dawn would have fallen to the same love spell than every other girl? It would have been a creepy sight indeed to see an 11-years old girl make sexual advance to Xander. Poor Xander.
"Faith, Hope and Trick": Would Dawn have been won over by Faith like everyone else? I think she would have: Dawn would have probably found Faith "cool".
"The Wish": We probably wouldn't have seen alternate universe version of Dawn, but maybe she would have mentionned something. Buffy was so cold in this universe, I can imagine it would be because Dawn was killed.
"Doppelgangland": I would pay to see Dawn reaction to Vampire Willow. Or to see Vamp Willow trying to snuggle with Dawn.
Also, I would love to know what relationship Dawn had with Angel. Did she saw him that much? Did she liked him? Did she knew he was a vampire at the same time the Scooby did or before Joyce?

I can see her teasing Buffy about why she's not as cool as Faith. Also, I would love to know what relationship Dawn had with Angel. Did she saw him that much? Did she liked him? Did she knew he was a vampire at the same time the Scooby did or before Joyce? Well, in the comics, she meets Angel in L.A. before Buffy does. He saves her when she gets attacked by vampires at a fairground. Dawn hugs him as a thank you, which is cute and makes Angel uncomfortable. During the "Innocence" flashback, she seems very trusting of Angel so I imagine she was fond of him.

It makes me wonder how much Dawn would really like Buffy in the earlier seasons. Buffy's really into her own thing and I would doubt that she would have very much time for Dawn in her life. It would radically alter the relationship between Buffy and Joyce - Joyce is likely to come down harder on Buffy for her behaviour, because she has a smaller 'baby' to look after as well. This could cause the Joyce/Buffy relationship to be more distant in general, which would be a shame.

None of these comics are canon, btw. What's interesting though is that there's a cut line from "Chosen" where Dawn tells Vi and some others about the Master killing Buffy, laughing, and Xander reviving her. The line reads as a first-hand account though so maybe Joss saw that story and decided to use it.
