Echo, while clearly being Dollhouse's protagonist, is not the original personality of the body she is in. I have been pondering since the very first episode what will be the implications of Echo having more control of Caroline's body and her surrounding as she becomes self-aware. "Vows" especially made me question where Echo path is leading.
The series has grappled with this issue, and not subtly, as Echo has now twice asserted that she is "the porch light" and that the real personality is in fact Caroline, and yet she is also a part of Caroline now ("She's me, and we're both coming to get you"). I've theorized that Echo is perhaps the "cure" against being imprinted in Epitaph One, which Adelle disdainfully tells Laurence that Caroline is in possession of, but still, this does not answer the question of what Echo's ultimate fate will be. Although we see Echo fully realized in the Russian girl scene with Paul, the episode later skips to where the person we see is supposedly Caroline and no one else. This ambiguity is as frustrating as it is intriguing.
Recently, Eliza Dushku also told reporters, regarding the second season and Echo's growing self-awareness:
So, what are your thoughts? What do you predict will happen to Echo? To Caroline?
Will Echo eventually decide to exist solely in Caroline's body, or will she instead sacrifice herself like Dr. Saunders could not? Will Caroline store Echo somewhere if it does come to such an end?

"Although this season will see Echo learning still more about her background as Caroline, she is actually getting further away from her original self. Her personality is becoming distinctly Echo, and some aspects of Caroline’s past aren’t necessarily things Echo wants any part of."
