I'd like to believe that the two of them see each other as brother and sister, and not as potential lovers.

Hmmm personally I think it would be cool for them to get together. But I DO NOT. Want them to ruin there friendship if they break up. They have the tightest bond out of everyone, and if they did get together i wouldn't want them to break up then "avoid" each other. That would be horrible. I just think Buffy needs a guy in her life. Let's look at the options: Xander, Andrew, Dracula, Giles, Twilight. I'm not even going to think about the other options. lol

Maybe I missed something, but what about Spike and Buffy? There's still the "I love you" from Chosen in the air. At least to me. Though I don't quite get that their relationship was never mentioned in the comics. Neither Buffy nor Angel. Did they have a talk in the time from the end of the series to the beginning of the comics? Did they just go on? (Hard to imagine, at least concerning Spikey) But leaving that out: I am of two minds about the Buffy-Xander-relationship thing. His love was in the recent years never as big as it was in Season 1/2, but I'd say she is still his dream woman. And he deserves to get his dream woman. But yeah, it would be pretty awkward. Love to see how this one turns out.

Thanks alot. Would make sense, but Andrew knows Spike is alive, Angel talked to Giles about saving Fred. It was never directly told to Buffy, but it would be very odd if no one, at least Andrew, told her. But it's plausible no one told her. But what about Spike? He stayed with Angel in order to save the world. Get that. He can't leave hell - get that too. But it was never revealed whether he thinks about Buffy or not. And I'd imagine this would be his first priority. Trying to get back to her. But I think I am getting a little off-topic.

I'm pretty sure the main reason, as has been expressed somewhat by Mr. Lynch, is that a) it'd be strange to insert a thought about Buffy out of nowhere and b) they don't have the legalities between the two publishers to do that. Although I think I only read the first point. It'd be like "Illyira, shut the bloody hell up. I wonder what Buffy's doing."

I know what you mean, talking/thinking about Buffy out of nowhere would sound inapt, but him not thinking about her at all, feels inapt as well. He wasn't too chatty about Buffy in Angel Season 5 too, but one thought or the other in "First Night" would've fit to emphasize his urge to see her again. Even if he just referred to her as "the Slayer", bypassing any legal issues. By the way, it would be a real bummer if the story can't develop correctly due to legal restrictions.

Wouldn't it be absolutely fantastic if Buffy and Xander flirted with the idea of getting together, and after much drawn-out tension, they finally do, and in the next frame we see Spike?? teehee, that would make me happy very much.

That reminds me of a Fic I once read where Buffy and Xander ended up visiting Angel and Spike in LA. It took a while before Angel and Spike realized that the pair had gotten together. Wish I could find that fic again, it was gold.

in a way it would be odd to see them get together... HOWEVER, with that being said, it's a thing most people can relate to. guy loves his girl best friend, she sees him as a brother, and a few years down the road, she realizes that's what she wants. i'm actually kinda rooting for it. let the underdog get the girl for once.

Maybe in the future when they're both retired from saving the world (if they live that long).

Came across this in my search for applicable quotes. Foreshadowing much? I recently watched that episode. Cute dialogue, that's true, but I always had the impression that (may it be because of the acting/writing) Buffy loved what Xander said but, maybe because of the litteral physical distance between both of them, not Xander himself.

Not exactly sure what you're trying to say there.
I do know this was one of the scenes that Jane Espenson mention had a very heavy B/X side to it, and that the writers were very aware of the whole thing. That really is one of the best B/X scenes ever.

It's just my very particular way to see things. I had the impression that Buffy was not excessively touched by the fact that it was Xander who said this to her, but that she was just flattered by the fact SOMEONE said this to her. Wouldn't have made much of a difference to me if Willow or Giles would've replaced Xander. But maybe it's just my weird perception.
