ohh, I just read fray before #12 and forgot all about the invitation (doh). I hope we get an egypt episode maybe a stand-a-lone all about the history after 'time of your life.'

Could Andrew even do this because doesn't he live in Rome? I know he was staying there over night, but he had just arrived for a visit.
I forgot about that. It has to be someone who lives at the residence. I remember it being stated in the Season 5 episode where Harmony could only be invited in by Dawn, Joyce, or Buffy. That means that it had to be one of the slayers, Xander, or one of the up and coming wiccas.

Wouldn't they be living in the castle illegally? I doubt they have an address. I'm thinking the castle is a public place that hasn't been looked at for many, many years, so Buffy and co. decided to move in.

I doubt Buffy owns the actual deed to that castle, so it isn't really hers. Buffy her band of Slayer are more or less one giant group of squatters.

Also... how the hell did the vampires breach the threshold... they weren't invited in, and technically, that's Buffy's home. So hmmm... even Dracula needed an invite from Joyce to enter. This is where I think the betrayer plays a significant part by inviting them into the castle. In my opinion, I think at this point it is either Satsu or Andrew. I can't remember which thread I posted this in, but I asked the exact same question. I agree that the traitor probably extended an invite; it's not just home to Buffy, it's home to the entire Scotland crew. Which means that it's very likely not Andrew, as it's not his home to invite them into. Now Satsu... she could have.

That Buffy and Co. would choose a location for Slayer Central that makes it a free-for-all for vamps to enter whenever they want or that the betrayer invited the Japanese Vamps in? Plus illegally occupying a castle in Scotland...not of the likely. The locals aren't gonna take too kindly to foreigners moving in and taking over one of their prized historical landmarks.

But they are in the middle on no where! Plus, they have all that techy stuff and an "enchanted moat" to tell if evil thingys are on their way. What did Buffy do? Go to the Scottish government and say "Hello, I would like to buy a castle in the middle of no where with the money I stole"?

I would think that they would've done something so demons couldn't enter. It would seem to be a sensible precaution.

A lot of the older castles and estates in Europe are sold because the ancestral families can't afford the upkeep. Some of the residences are turned into tourist attractions to finance it. Buffy wouldn't have to contact the gov't to purchase a property, there are plenty that are privately owned through aristocratic families. If you've got the money (which Buffy stole so she does) you can buy a castle. But damn she must have stolen ALOT of money to be able to afford all these pricey locations throughout the world.
As for being in the middle of nowhere, that pretty much sums up most of Scotland besides Edinburgh and some other major cities. The country has a lot of islands and its terrain makes it easy to be isolated.

I remember in the series.... perhaps it was on Angel.... the black ops team from the Watchers' council contacted Wesley... I rememebr them saying something about how it was humiliating that the council wouldn't even provide him with a flight back to England, even though they had all those alchemists. So with all the Wiccas and everything, why don't they just fund the slayer operation that way -- the way the old Watchers Council was funded? Do you guys think that maybe this is an option? We don't know for sure that what we say in Anywhere But Here is in the past or future or what... Plus, like emmie said, that's A LOT of dough to steal to pay for all of these locales, let alone just the castle in Scotland.

In "A Beautiful Sunset",Buffy and Xander talked about the bank robbery. So,that already happened.

If you saw, she was holding a GIGANTIC diamond, and yes, that already happened.
I don't think the funding from the Watcher's Council is an option because they weren't intimate with that society anymore, no contacts. They probably weren't funded by the covens, those guys were referring to the ability to teleport...

Wouldn't they be living in the castle illegally? I doubt they have an address. I'm thinking the castle is a public place that hasn't been looked at for many, many years, so Buffy and co. decided to move in. That's my thinking as well. I doubt Buffy owns the actual deed to that castle, so it isn't really hers. Buffy her band of Slayer are more or less one giant group of squatters. I was watching 'Fredless' the other day and Angel couldn't enter Fred's room in his own hotel without an invite. It wasn't him being polite either. Fred had made that room her home and even though Angel's name is on the lease for the entire hotel, he couldn't enter her room. It seems like the concept of home is not so much about the paper trail that humans create (like a deed or lease) but the metaphysical connection to home and hearth. As for an invitation to vampires to enter, I can think of only two kinds: the verbal invite by the person living there and the latin inscription on Sunnydale High saying 'Enter all ye who seek knowledge'. So without a verbal invite or an inscribed invitation on the entrance, I don't see how the Japanese Vamps (we really need a nickname for them) could enter since the castle is very obviously Buffy & Co's home. Also, I don't consider castles to be public places, especially in Scotland where castles were occupied by clans which were just big extended families. A castle was just a really big family home back in the day, a fortress to keep out intruders - ya don't get more intruder-ish than vamps. I'm imagining the vampire invitation as the homeowners ceding dominance of their personal domain to a guest. In welcoming/inviting a vamp in you compromise your metaphysical control of your home space. Once the vampire has gained entrance/dominance over the metaphysical space, they can maintain control indefinitely until its mystically reversed. I think the disinvitation spells Willow has done to Angel and Spike are a magical way of restoring the home owner's metaphysical dominance of the home. ~ The Scythe thread has gone way off-topic. I'm very tangent-y.

I haven't read every post in this thread, so I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but did anyone notice that Buffy had her Scythe locked in a cabinent in The Long Way Home, which appeared to be in her room, then in Wolves at the Gate she had it stored in the armory, did anyone else notice that?
It appears she's upped the security for the Scythe, I can't think of a way that she can use it, and have it handy and the Scythe be any safer than it is, locked in the armory in the Slayer castle. Unless Willow can cast a spell to prevent it being touched by anyone who isn't a Slayer.

dane5by5: Yes, I noticed that too. I even pulled out #4 and compared it to #12. But I guess what looked like her cabinet could very well have been the armory... there really wasn't any background detail in that shot in #5, I don't think. And since the Scythe is a mystical artifact, it's possible that Willow can't enchant it, no matter how adept she is. I mean, we're tapping into magics more ancient than just about anything known, barring the Shadow Men's Slayer creation spell. So far, we've seen the Scythe used as a conduit of sorts for magic, but not really had anything lasting performed on it. Also, say Willow performs that spell... way too easy... it's like the recurring gripe that there's just about nothing that Willow can't do right now.

dane5by5: it's like the recurring gripe that there's just about nothing that Willow can't do right now. I'd like to see something instituted that kind of limits her power... like in Charmed, they had that whole "personal gain" thing going on where they couldn't use their powers to benefit themselves or else karma or the elders or whatever would somehow punish them.... maybe not something so cliche, but i would like to see some limits to her power... or else it just gets ridiculous and too unbelievable. I mean we have to accept that this is a fantasy world, but she seems to have limitless powers....

They probably weren't funded by the covens, those guys were referring to the ability to teleport... According to what I read on StephenT's livejournal, the plane Buffy and Co used to travel to Tokyo was a C-5A Galaxy Transport. Worth $160 million. Whoa daddy! Geez how much money did Buffy steal? I'm not surprised her group is being viewed as a terrorist organization. And that's just the plane, not including the other Slayer locales around the world. Wonder who's doing the finances for Team Slayer.

I'm going with the theory that they chartered the plane. A lot easier to afford than say coughing out $160 million, doncha think?

I think that chartering the plane makes sense. But its an American military cargo plane - you'd think it'd be difficult for Team Slayer to charter the plane from a U.S. contractor. I don't know much about it though. Maybe there's a black market for 250 ft planes.
Eh, the logistical details never were all that important in the Buffyverse.

Nope, and that's why I'm not sweating it. The issue came up on Whedonesque.com, and the whole money issue came up, and suddenly it just got kinda nuts. So I'm sticking to chartering. Hell, maybe Willow teleported it, and then they got someone to fly it. Point is, it really doesn't matter just yet. But if that whole bit about how the Slayer organization is gonna look worse than terrorists in the near future is to be taken as seriously as it sounds, then maybe it's something to consider in retrospect. I love hindsight... it's so clear, it makes me feel like I've have Lasik!
