New info about the scythe we learn in Wolves at the Gate 4:
Dracula: "Take my sword. Its one of the ancient relics. Bound with demon spirit -- like your scythe."
So the scythe is bound with the demon spirit that makes a girl into a slayer. It's just nice to clarify what exactly "essence of the scythe" means and that unleashing it means channeling the original demon spirit.

Don't you just love tidbits like these? I was actually quite beside myself when I read that bit... it was like another piece of the puzzle clicked into place. Although... if the demon essence (heart) was placed into the first Slayer... where did they get the demon essence for the Scythe? Another demon of the same race? They halved the heart? Also... suddenly, the Guardians just got a wee bit darker.

Copied from my post in the Issue 15 discussion:
"Think there's any chance that "demon spirit" of the Scythe is Saga Vasuki? It would explain how Willow first came into contact with her (casting the spell back in S7), and maybe even explain what that "hot tip" that leads them to Manhattan is. That panel where Saga talks to her shows her all wrapped around what looks to me like Manhattan. Not to mention that panel shows the Scythe itself, which ... why would it show it there if she wasn't connected to it? Last but not least, It's apparent that Kumiko learned from Saga. Perhaps that's why she knows how to reverse Willow's spell."

Plausible... and I kinda like it. Although on the flip side, it's possible that the Scythe is in that vision because Vasuki's telling Willow where to look for more answers. She may be connected to it, or she could just be so old that she knows about its origins. My only problem with your theory is that for Kumiko to have learned from Vasuki, she'd probably have had to be in contact with the Scythe for a much longer period than just a few days. So while I like the theory of Willow first coming into contact with Vasuki when she performed the spell (the subtext is there to support this: "Oh... my... goddess!" when she performed the spell, and "Goddess" here when she was swooning from the vision), unless Vasuki's just handing out her secrets left and right to any adept witch, Kumiko probably had to access her through some other means, than the Scythe.

Turning the topic back to the scythe...
As CBG mentioned earlier, the scythe seems to be from Egypt, at least, that's where the canon is pointing us toward. Here's another tid bit that helps that conclusion, from End of Days.

Which would make sense, since Egypt's in northern Africa, where the first Slayer rose. However... how old is the weapon anyway? Or for that matter (since it's the more important question), how old is the Slayer lineage? But, whatever. Considering how much ancient Egyptians relied on agriculture (hence the civilization starting at the Nile), a scythe would be a logical choice of a weapon. However, since the Scythe bears about zero resemblance to an actual scythe, I'll say that it's more symbolically significant than anything else. A champion of the people wielding the weapon of the people. According to Urkonn, it was forged eons ago, for the Slayer alone. Wishing that it had actual historical influences, rather than just looking kinda nifty with the right lighting, and downright tacky from screenshots of replicas being pandered about. If it predates the Bronze Age (and therefore most ancient civilizations)... then metallurgy would be hard to buy, since well... no metal yet.

It's a good point, that the scythe doesn't look that old...maybe it magically downloads updates for itself like my computer I don't think the demon spirit in the scythe comes from Saga Vasuki, but rather she's 'in the know' regarding the scythe and its history. So she's pointing Willow in the direction of NYC to find more info.
