I think you’re probably right Emmie, especially about the time. That seems to be one thing a lot of fans have had trouble with this season. It can’t be helped and I understand why we have to wait a month but it does raise people’s expectations quite a bit. Fans have a whole month to scrutinise each issue right down to its most minute details. We love to talk Buffy and we’ll talk about anything new we can get. So it’s quite a miracle if an issue comes out unscathed and well-loved by all. It also raises expectations for what’s coming next. Fans love to speculate and usually we all come to some sort of consensus about what will happen next. When the story takes a different direction or doesn’t focus on what we were expecting it to (after a month of discussing it) people get frustrated or disappointed. If we got a new issue every week I don’t think this would happen anywhere near as much, but that’s not practical.
In regards to the ongoing Angel series, the lack of direction is one of my issues with it. I think Season 8 has the benefit of being in the structure of a season so we see the start and beginning of a story. It’s comforting to know that once season 8 finishes we’ll be getting a season nine. It’s orderly and easy to understand. All these one shots are a little harder to organise. I think that's why I enjoyed After the Fall because I knew it was going to be 17 issues long, that it was kind of like a mini-movie and there was a beginning and an end.
