If I were Willow, I'd be mighty pi**ed. She's just not used to being the powerless sidekick anymore. Just saying ...

^^I have a feeling she will be two. I honestly never really like the idea of Willow flying. Now Buffy is doing it too.

I believe it was Buffy flying and it's absolutely brilliant. Because Buffy's eventual ability to fly has been foreshadowed by Whedon this entire season. First, when she flies with Willow in Anywhere But Here and is too afraid to open her eyes. Next with Twilight in A Beautiful Sunset where she grits her teeth, bearing it because she must. Then we have her jumping off of flying cars in Time of Your Life. It's moments like these where I'm struck with why I love Whedon so much. Because it was all right there, laid out in front of us - the story had been building up to this point for a long time, but it still came as a complete shock to me. And yes, I do believe this is part of how Buffy will be able to face Twilight. And it's such an awesome metaphor that only in giving away power, can one truly know power. It's like that saying, if you love someone, set them free. If they return to you, then your love is true. You cannot be caged by your love or your power - through being open, you can be connected to true power. There were definitely some iffy moments in this issue, but the ending is so gobsmackingly brilliant in how it was laid out that I don't care. It's moments like this where Whedon just reminds me "This - this is why I love Buffy." There's a thread of transitive power underneath this entire season and I'm only now just understanding how to tease it out. That perhaps the message after you've been given power isn't that you clutch at it so tightly (that you steal for it, you kill for it, you destroy worlds for it), but that you set it free so it may choose to return to you. If it's truly yours, it will return to you. And isn't that very Tibetan-style - only in letting go of everything can you truly know yourself and fully actualize. Hughes cover makes so much sense to me now. When Buffy was Chosen, Excalibur was forced into her hand. It was a burden to carry the sword or in Buffy's case, the shining stake. But in Retreat, after an entire season of robbing, cheating, stealing and killing to keep her power, in finally learning to let it go she takes an even firmer hold on what's truly hers. This is just really beautiful to me. There are some technical moments in the issue that I find were poorly executed, but as is always the case with Buffy - the meaning has just blown me away. Wow. Excalibur, indeed. (sorry to quote your whole post but i couldn't work out which bits to cut!) What i wanted to add was that i thought the timing of Buffy's line; "protect everything that bleeds" was wonderful, it dove tails into what you say here - because that is a realization, Buffy coming back to herself after her and the slayers have drifted so far of the mark, even Xander (Occupy territory'?!?! bayonets?!?! etc) i LOVED this issue, it did all that the previous one failed to do. i fell over laughing at Warren sounding like an S8 critic; 'only i wasn't sure - did you mean?' all that jive. loved the Twilight 'Angel style' coat flare moment and the moments of connection between T and Buffy suggesting they might be the same person. Even the hit and miss art work didn't spoil for me.

I liked this issue vary much. My favorite parts were when Amy and Warren were arguing and Amy shoving Twilight a side, that was funny. Can't wait for the next issue.

well. here in costa rica we do not have a decent enough comic books store but i manage to talk sense into the owner of the one i always visit and he contacted the dark horse rep and i have issue 30, willow one shot and issue 31 already ordered. wohoo.
in the meantime a friend of mine in the us was kind enought to scan the thing for me and i have to say tht i loved every single page.
i don't mind the flying (nor on willow or buffy) this series has been over the top since the tv era and i love to see it here in comic form.
storywise i felt that the writting can be improved but i was pleased with the overall arc...

Wonder how Faith and Willow will take it If she makes it through everything and still does not have her powers, I could almost see Faith being a bit relieved. She's struggled with her power since BTVS S4/Angel S1, and and has had to carry the responsibility of power and the guilt of her actions with her since then.

I actually really liked the issue and didn't think the artwork was all that bad....a bit sketchy in places but good overall. Two things: a) Twilight doesn't seem very strong, Amy easily pushed him out of the way. It's been shown in the past that people with super strength don't move when pushed so he either enhances his power with magic (which made add more points to his hypocrite card) and it comes and goes. That or the crazy idea (to me anyway) that he's from the future and he has mad future tech to do all the bad ass stuff. b) Buffy flying. I don't mind it. I'm betting on the Goddess remembering that they were meant to pay the strength back and gave it back to Buffy, giving back a bit too much in the process. Scott made it sound like there was more to her new powers than flight. What really interests me is the posistion this leaves everyone else. It's basically back to Season 1. Buffy is the only one with powers and everyone else is normal (not counting the Slayers not with the gang). Very interesting. I predict many Big Damn Heroes moments in Turbulence. Maybe Buffy will even round up the Slayers that hadn't joined them, I can't see her trying to rescue everyone by herself. Also I'm anxious to see how everyone is going to take being powered down while being is super-super-powered. I can't see Willow taking it well after her previous outbursts. And one more thing: who was it that took the bullet for Buffy? Is she dead? My first guess would be Satsu, it looked her but I couldn't really tell, it wasn't too clear. Any guesses?

It was Satsu, but she didn't take a bullet. She pushed Buffy out of the way (and into the goddess' hand) and then shot the sniper, but there's no indication he got a shot off.

well all that hype and i was kind of left feeling, AND..........? So riley is a good guy after all, i still liked the idea of sam becomming a slayer and leaving him. I think this is the point future dark willow was trying to avoid. Buffy's got the strength of all the slayers and powers of a goddess and will kill someone, maybe twilight. So my guess it's all downhill for our hero in the next arc

It sounds more like Riley was never IN the Twilight group--or else that he defected REALLY early on. I'm starting to like the idea of Buffy flying. Except now I have weird thoughts about Twilight being Buffy from the future----which I am POSITIVE is not the case. There is sure gonna be one epic battle between Buffy and Twilight in mid-air, though! I'm excited. I totally get the issues with Buffy flying, but it seems so strange to me to hear all these people say that they don't like Willow flying this season. Willow has been able to outright fly since Season Six ("Two to Go") and has been hovering since Season Five ("Family" and "Tough Love"). Plus, levitation was one of the very first spells she ever learned (floating pencils all throughout Season Three, anyone?). I think it makes perfect sense for Willow to fly. And I agree with Emmie about how thoroughly forshadowed Buffy's flying was this entire season. It's amazing that it's something no one picked up on. I'm a little embarrassed, actually. I've been looking for common threads that have gone on this whole season, and this one has been staring me in the face ever since "The Long Way Home" when Andrew needed dramamine to fly with Willow. As for Satsu, I never fully realized how often she was there throughout the issue. I will re-read it and check it out. I would love it if she was the girl to push Buffy out of the way of sniper's fire AND the girl driving the car. I have to go home and re-read it! I'm excited!

Hm.... Buffy's aspiration to become Powergirl has finally come true. She can't yet aspire to Power Girl's cup size, however. Probably best that she doesn't. Without Kryptonian strength, it would lead to back pain.

I really really like flying Buffy, and I really really liked this issue in contrast to the arc which i was pretty disappointed with. I love Satsu in it and I like the way it ended, In my opinion, this is the best issue since time of your life ended. I cant wait to see what happens next and this really just makes me think that twilight is actually future Buffy and that we just saw twilight gain the ability to fly in that last panel. I mean twilight being anything but a guy isnt really gonna work but i dunno

well... i loved this issue... i was expecting something really crazy... like xander killing dawn, or buffy being the villain... but she flying??? its just ok for me... i think we'll fully understand the flying thing later... so i dont see as a bad thing... but i'm really looking foward to see how willow will react... the way i see buffy just embraced her powers now... she's not only the chosen one... she's THE ONE... and i think we're heading to the fray future... i was insecure about this season after the predators and prey fiasco... but this arc is just joss... i can see his fingers all over... i think next year gonna be LE-GEN-DA-RY, for us...
and about the next arc name... i really dont think it was spoilerish.... i can see why... but it i would never imagine it was about buffy flying... so... let's the turbulence begins...

Could Amy be behind Buffy flying? Helping her out by getting her to lower ground and Double crossing twilight?

Hi guys. Long time lurker, first time poster. I really enjoy reading these forums but have been content just enjoying you guys' insights into Season 8. But now I'm kinda curious about two things I haven't noticed mentioned much yet (perhaps they have been mentioned and I just haven't seen it, in which case I apologize).
1)This issue Twilight says "They're mortal. They have to die sometime." Isn't that somewhat of a big clue? Doesn't that indicate that he's something other than mortal? Or do you guys think I'm reading too much into that line?
2)Everyone seems to agree that Future Dark Willow was evil, but when I originally read TOYL that's not how I interpreted it at all. I always saw her as being filled with the dark magics, yes, but ultimately trying to help Buffy. All of FDW's machinations in that story were SOLELY to get Buffy to kill her, but why? I've been thinking that all the energy that flowed down when Buffy ran her through was some sort of energy FDW was imparting into Buffy. Before this issue I was thinking that FDW had planted some Easter Egg (for lack of a better term) in Buffy that would help her in her final battle. But when I saw Buffy gain those superpowers after being in contact with the giant blue goddess my first thought was that maybe that's what FDW did to Buffy, grant her some kind of ability to leech her powers back when she needed them the most. Does that make sense at all? Any thoughts on that?

sati: Interesting thoughts on the significance of "ToYL". And I don't think the consensus of this forum (at least), is that FDW was evil. In fact, quite a few people have pointed out that the FDW we saw in "ToYL" was very different from the one in S6.
