You can capture the essence of a character without being slave to realistic depictions and actor likenesses. Karl Moline is an ideal example... I think his Buffy is perfectly recognisable as Buffy because he captures her spirit and body language. Same with "After These Messages...", even though the art was very basic and cartoony, it perfectly embodied the characters.
The problem with Angel: Aftermath's art wasn't that it was cartoony, it was that is was out-of-character. Kate would never dress like that, and is physically incapable of those acrobatics, so the essence of the character just wasn't there. She became a generic action bimbo.
As for emotions and facial expressions not coming across as well in cartoony/stylized art, I completely disagree. I actually think more exaggerated art is better at conveying emotions. Photorealistic art always looks a little flat to me, because no matter how much it looks like the actor, it's not going to have the subtle performance an actor brings. Almost like the "uncanny valley" theory - it can look human, but there's something off about it.

I agree I think that captuing the essence of a character is more important than capturing likenesses and often cartoony art does do this better, but some very cartoony art can be over-simplified and we can loose the subtleties of facial epressions etc.
It's not a TV show, it's a comic so photorealism isn't the main priority, but at the same time a balance needs to be achieved that makes the comic easily understandable and I think Jeanty does this really well

Found this ARTICLE today on Newsarama about a young upcoming artist who will be illustrating the The Mortal Instruments comics. She claims to be a fan of the Buffyverse, but that's just a sidebar. Her character sketches, as well as a couple of her panels look really good... and she's definitely someone I wouldn't mind take a swing at the Buffyverse. She's tied down with her own commitments, of course... but if Dark Horse were to take a chance on a relatively unknown artist, she'd be a nice fit, methinks.

I didn't like Molines art at first, but later in the issues it picked up a lot. I would have absolutely no problem with him doing Season 9. This panel is what made me fall in love with the art: Pia Guerra would be excellent aswell. I've never saw those Buffy pages, but they're fantabulous. I do enjoy Jeantys work, but it's getting a bit annoying. When I look at Jeantys earlier work on Buffy and compare it to the newer issues, it's clear he's getting a bit sloppy on some small aspects.

i kinda hope they shy away from alternate covers for season nine. i preferred chen's portrait/painting style over the true to the pages artwork that jeanty's been doing. both are great artists, but i hate having to choose which cover to buy, and for being an avid collector i WANT to buy them both. but my wallet tells me not to does anybody know if they will continue the alternate covers tradition for season 9?

does anybody know if they will continue the alternate covers tradition for season 9? Probably... they make money from the collectors who just have to have both. I usually just take whichever cover they stick in my pull box. High-res copies of both are available on the net anyway. I don't have the storage space to collect 2 copies of each issue.

^^ I usually only buy one because I usually only like one of the covers. I don't mind spending money on two covers, as long as I really like both. When it comes to me and my Buffy, an extra 3 bucks ain't no thang
