They had the choice of doing putting Dollhouse in a successful slot (in this case, after American Idol) or in an unsuccessful slot (Friday night, any time).
They made the choice, darn it. I can only blame FOX for refusing to support this show, and only begrudgingly allowing a second season after much viewer temper tantrum.

Ah, right. The first season. When life was full of meaning.  I still stand by the fact that Dollhouse + Terminator = excellent ratings, but FOX decided it needed more sitcoms (silly idea really, CBS is still dominating that area with NBC following, why even bother anymore when the whole genre's pretty much got its best stuff on other networks) and apparently the Terminator fandom wasn't working as hard as the Dollhouse fandom - which admittedly might be true, but doesn't make our efforts any less in vain. <-- There's something wrong with this sentence but I can't put my finger on it yet, I'll be back at some ungodly hour to fix this. TBH, in a perfect world SyFy would have all the best sci-fi/fantasy shows and would be dominating the ratings, BUT WE DON'T LIVE IN A PERFECT WORLD ;( |

At least I have the false hope that SyFy will pick up Dollhouse or Mutant Enemy will produce a Dollhouse movie.

Why didn't they put Kitchen Nightmare's before it? KN got somewhat better ratings, so it could pull in a few more viewers for Dollhouse and some people wouldn't have missed it because of the time change.
