"Most fearsome enemy" could mean Buffy herself, or her dark side. Given the cover for #40, I think I could be right...

Okay, just had a second look at that image cover preview (for 39). Anybody notice the orange swirls in the lower left corner? Looks kind of like flames. What it Buffy is somehow in the Turok-Han Hellmouth crater and is looking at herself and Spike right before he bursts in to flames. Would Buffy fighting herself and alter the events of 'Chosen'? Would Spike die, never destroy the Hellmouth, and let the Turok-Han free, thus never destroying Sunnydale? Is this whole season really just a set up to bring Sunnydale (as a town and not a massive crater) back in season 9?
Anyway, I can't believe we're so close to the end. It's been a long, wonderful ride since 2007.

What's everyones thoughts on the un-blacked out cover shown in issue 38. Gotta say I wasn't as excited as I hoped.

Thanks for the link! <3 The composition looks really strange to me. I'm guessing she's meant to be fighting Angel rather than using his body to jump off of in order to hit someone else (as it would seem from that cover). Also, isn't that Spike's wardrobe he's wearing? Tucked in t-shirt, tight jeans, the belt.. at least it's a huge step up from his Twilight costume.
Gotta agree with droolingpumpkin, I was pretty underwhelmed as to the surprise factor. I had already seen the preview pages for 38 where Angel gets possessed by kitty!twilight so didn't expect him to play nice.

Isn't it funny how this seems to be echoing Season 2? Buffy sleeps with Angel, then has to fight him to save the world. Same thing happening here

After seeing the unblocked cover I feel they didnt have to even block it out, as its not really a suprise lol. Sometimes i feel like the comics are written by someone who has only seen the first 3 seasons and thinks that the readers are either new ones to the Buffyworld or same as him, seen only the first 3 seasons and nothing else. Only in that case Angel's appearance in cover 39 is such a huge "TOP SECRET" In every other case, it just seems sooooo STUPID

Yea I'm definitely disappointed in how much they hyped it up. Also I kinda just assumed that since it's "top secret" that was going to be the betrayer. Although in 38 it kinda looked like everyone might end up betraying each other, I assumed that the person on the cover was the gonna be the "closest most unexpected".
And given the events of season 8 I'd hardly call that the most unexpected. In fact that's pretty much the most obvious choice.

Angel and Willow would be painfully obvious choices for "betrayer"... which is why I don't think they're the ones the prophecy was referring to. Xander would be unexpected, but I feel like this might be a misdirect... why would Xander listen to anything that General has to say?
Still wondering where Giles ran off to, and why.

The cover was blacked out for a simple reason: it essentially spoils a plot point from #38. The preview for #38 shows Angel fighting Twilight, not succumbing to it. Having a cover with Buffy fighting Angel essentially ruins that element of surprise. It essentially suggests that for one reason or another, Angel flops to the other side. That said... I'm once again not a fan of the Chen cover. Too posey. It doesn't feel like they're fighting at all, rather, it looks like some awkward beginner's attempt at drawing a ballet performance. Guess I'm settled on which cover to get this time around...

I hope it was just top secret for #38 plot point. Im thinking the betrayer would be more of a suprise if it ISNT on the cover lol.

Guess I'm settled on which cover to get this time around... On the other hand, there's the idea of a staged performance of ultra-violence, a la A Clockwork Orange (the film, particularly the scene on the stage). May not have been Chen's idea, but it kinda speaks to me on the whole "oh gee Buffy and Angel are going to fight again after having sex, YAWN" level. Hoping for a big surprise.
