People seem to have pretty varied opinions regarding the last few seasons of Buffy (on TV, anyway). I'm curious as to what the actual numbers are.
I actually really enjoyed them both quite a bit. A lot of people told me very bad things about season 6 so I went into it with very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I prefer season 6 a little bit over season 7.

I love Season 6, and I like Season 7 okay (although Buffy's standalones have always been better than its arcs, and Season 7 didn't have many of the former). I always have to wonder why it's just those two that are lumped together, though, since Season 5 is part of the package, thematically (Seasons 1-3: adolescence, Seasons 5-7: young adulthood, Season 4: bridge).

I wouldn't say I "hated" Season 6, but I think its easily the weakest season of the Buffyverse (but still ten times better than most crap on TV right?) I feel there's a big sag in the middle where the qaulity dips considerarbly
Season 7 I enjoyed a lot

Season six was an excellent year but suffered a little by the success of it's theme of the gang becoming adults. Even though I appreciated what Joss was saying I really had no interest in seeing Buffy work in some dead end job. The whole idea of fast food annoys me at the best of times (I won't eat at places like MacDonalds or Burger King) and to see someone as special as Buffy, a slayer no less, have to suffer working in a place like that was a little too depressing for me, but then that was the point. I was much happier when she got the job at the school, doing something I felt was more in her line. Actually trying to help those that needed it, rather than serve them bad food. The rest of season six was excellent though. As for season seven, my only regret is that the story (and resulting cast) was just to damn big for 22 episodes. It suffered by not having enough time to tell the story of the slayercide properly. That's my only regret. That, and the lack of good Xander moments.

Season 7 of Buffy and season 4 of Angel were both totally consumed by the story and didn't have much character growths.

Season 7 of Buffy and season 4 of Angel were both totally consumed by the story and didn't have much character growths. Oh, I'm not sure about that. Buffy, Spike, Willow, Wesley, Fred and others actually were quite well developed over the runs of the two respective seasons you mentioned. Very arc-heavy development, but still development, nevertheless. The problem was the other end of the spectrum with characters like Xander who were almost entirely left behind.

Season 6 was in my opinion one of the best seasons. Season 6 i think was one of the season where the characters grew the most. And in fact had alto more close to life themes then normal seasons i think. Season 7 felt short but that was because it was really each, the season in Buffy verse didn't last over a year i think from ep one to the last one it must have been like 3 or so months in Buffy verse. Maybe thats why it didn't feel long. but still rocking

I really don't understand some of the hate for these seasons. I don't find them bad at all, just more Buffy.
In my opinion, the first half of Season 7 was pure gold. Everything from Lessons to Showtime was great, it was probably on the way of becoming my favorite season, but then it stopped. It just started moving too slowly. The First was set up as an amazing villian! That last scene in Lessons is one of my favorites in the series and it was also great in CWDP, but later it just become boring and not scary. They could of done so much with it!
The one thing that bugged me most about the last half of Season 7 was what happened with Xander, Anya and Dawn. They did nothing. They were shelved. Anya wasn't in Help, CWDP or Dirty Girls and she had only ONE line in LMPTM, she was there for comic relief, nothing else. Dawn just stood there and Xander fixed stuff.
Luckily things picked up again in the last five episodes.

i always loved seasons 6 and 7, just because it was nice relating to the characters as they matured with me. but there are some aspects to each season i found disappointing. season 6 is arguably the most depressing season because the scoobys vs. villain scenario is inverted. the scoobies are the big bad throughout the season while the "big bad" trio are the campy fun. although only the buffyverse could make depressing that entertaining. i liked it better when the scoobies were having fun and kicking ass. which leads me to season 7 where my problem was that no one was having fun (except anya and andrew with there wheelchair battles )

These seasons are the weakest of the show since the first. I actually like the overall story of 6, but I find the delivery on many of the key plots of the season lacking. In short, the episodes suck (except for OMWF of course). Season 7 is the opposite. It has a crap season plot, but with many strong episodes. Joss was never really any good at those real big plotlines, and season 7 was also pretty lazy in terms of exposition; so it falls short of epic and lands in vague bullshit territory. Both seasons have their positives. Season 6 has an interesting villain in Warren, all of the characters get some time to develop; oh and the musical, don't forget the musical. Season 7 has good development for Buffy and also Spike, although the others fall by the wayside, and many great episodes. I will always hate season 6, for Hells Bells in particular. I don't agree with the decision to break Anya and Xander up, so imagine how much harder to take it is with that piece of schit episode to break it to me.

I loved both of the seasons on the first viewing, but as I've viewed them repeatedly, they don't hold up as well. Especially season seven.
I thought the structure of that season as a whole was pretty fuckered; The First was an amazingly ineffectual villain and I think it would've worked out better if Caleb was introduced at the beginning of the season instead of just being tacked on at the end to give Buffy a physical threat with some real personality. 'cause really, that threat should've been there the entire time.
I was never too fond of the really dumb attempts to make Dawn relevant either. (Hey, guys, I just happened to learn ancient turkish overnight! I can totally translate this.)
I also wanted Willow's character arc to focus on the weight of the loss of Tara and her guilt for what she did when she went all Jean Grey at the end of the previous season. The mad rush to make her happy never set well with me.

I'd place Season 6 around the middle of the pack as far as my favorite seasons go, and Season 7 is my second least favorite season. Unlike Season 5 (which was more or less one giant story arc with a few "monster of the week" episodes thrown in), Season 7 just did not have a strong enough villain, and I agree with the post above that Caleb should have been introduced earlier.
I thought Spike monopolized way too much of the show and his developments after getting his soul were not handled very well. I did love Faith's return, and Season 7 does have some very strong episodes (Selfless, Dirty Girls, Conversations with Dead People, ironically, all Goddard episodes), but the way that everything was handled could have been much more tighter.
I also hated what happened to Buffy and Giles' relationship.

Season 6 where willow turns evil...that was the best. i just love that evil character. she's so full of emotion and pin. and who wouldn't be. If i was a witch and some one would kill the person i love... i would totally rip them up! go dark willow.

The only thing I didn't like about six was the fact there was really no BIG villain until the very end, when Willow went crazy. Warren, Andrew, and Johnaton did a few things they really shouldn't have, but none of them were ever that big of a threat to the world.
Season 7 was one of my favorites. It had Faith's return to Buffy, Spike trying to deal with having a soul, and The First trying to take over.

Love them both! Loved the way they grew as characters and lots of people say that season 6 was too dark and depressing but I think it was extremely relevent in character development and to be honest I think it's a fantastic season, just like the rest were. In fact I'm in the middle of watching it now, just finished "Dead Things" and it's excellent! The thing about Buffy is that it is my favourite show because I like everything about it. Buffy and Giles' distant relationship is getting even more distant in season 8, but I'm interested to see what they do with it.

I liked the season 6 story, but I felt that it should have been a little darker.I loved OMWF,Tabula Rasa,Normal Again, and the last three episodes, but I felt that the rest of the season was a little weak.
I didn't like season 7 though. Some episodes were o.k.,but I thought that, overall,it wasn't very good. The best thing I can say about it is that it leads into season 8,which I am enjoying very much.

season 7 could've used a little more work sure, but c'mon, they brought back Sunnydale High. That alone made season 7 pretty damn good.
