Season 6 was fantastic. It was hard to see where it would lead as Andrew, Jonathan and Warren were weak villains (but hello they still were pretty funny) but it cleverly led to Willow going out of control at the end and that was genius because we could have seen it coming. And OMWF and Normal Again were just extraordinary episodes.
Season 7 was more disappointing to me because it had a lot of "potential"... and too many potentials eventually! Pun intended. I just felt like they could have done scarier things with the First. Also I didn't like the fact that Spike had too much exposition and I couldn't stand his screaming all along with the chip. I also thought Willow should have been suffering a lot longer for Tara's loss.

I liked season 6 alright, but really, really have no use for season 7.
Season 6: This could have been brilliant. The downfall of Willow. Its all very Dark Phoenix Saga inspired, right? The problem is, Joss forgot why that X-Men storyline worked dramatically. The tragic heroine HAS to die. That Willow lived on to have a shiny, happy ending drives me nuts and makes me not care about her character arc at all. I still like to fantasize that Xander killed Willow at the end of "Grave." Now thats an ending. Plus it would have given Xander something to work with drama-wise in S7 instead of being completely pointless.
Season 7: Oh, lets spend all season Mary Sue-ing Spike until he literally explodes from too much sun shining from his ass. I appreciate unintentional hilarity as much as the next guy, but that? Really? And then he ends up getting another shot at life in Angel S5 because The-Powers-That-WB demand cheap ratings gimmicks. Meh.

I guess I liked season 7 a little more than season 6. I really enjoyed the interatcion with the potentials and and the build-up to the final fight. Xanders sacrifice (at the hands of Caleb) is pretty significant so I give that a lot of weight as well. I will admit though, that OMWF is one of my favorite episodes so I am a little torn.

I love both seasons. yes, season 6 is really dark and depressing at times, but it really does have some great things to offer just as all the seasons do, in my opinion. Actually, there is no season of the series that I dislike. I love them all and have watched them all a million and one times. Any Buffy is better than no Buffy at all!

I liked both . I have always wondered why most would say that season 6 is weakest. I think it's just because the character's were fighting personal demons instead of real ones this season and that turned off alot of viewers who liked having a real big bad and a monster of the week.

Yep and in fighting their personal demons, we lost the metaphor. In the earlier seasons the demons were metaphors for those young life struggles.
Joss did say "au revoir le metaphor" in reference to season 6. I know he was talking about all the graphic sex, but the metaphors for the episodic demons was lost too.
It was a brave season for inverting the big bad formula.

I loved every season. 6 and 7 were not my favorites, but they were still amazing as well. I agree with what everyone else has said (sex, personal demons, etc.) but there's three things that just make those seasons amazing. - Andrew - Spike and Andrew on a motorcycle. And this...

If it weren't for the first few and last few episodes in Season 7, I probably would have chosen something different.
Instead, "both" gets my vote.
Though a big /sigh to Andrew. lol

Oh I love that pic of Andrew and Spike. When Spike's talking about how good that onion flower thing is, and he's all like if you tell anyone that we had this conversation I'll bite you.

Yep and in fighting their personal demons, we lost the metaphor. That was intentional, though. Joss Whedon: Everything suddenly isn't bigger than life -- everything is incredibly life-sized, including the villains. That was really what it was about. It was about the literalisation of your life. When you're fifteen you're thinking, "I'm slaying dragons", and when you're 22, you're thinking, (groaning) "I'm working in a video store!" And they're very different experiences and we wanted to capture that. We wanted to explore the dark side of her power and her relationships and all that stuff, and how hard it is to enter the grown-up world.

I liked the bigger-than-life feel from the earlier seasons. Its prolly my escapist bent. Season 6 was def not about escaping, rather it was about tossing you into a literal pit of angst and pain tied together with overwhelming responsibilities.

Neither one of the season are a my favorite season. In fact most episodes from season 6, I've only seen once or twice. In bothy season I often skip to my favorite scene per episode, since there's so much pain.
I think that season 6 is vital and and dealt with important issues, but it's like that movie/book you saw/or read that you tell everyone that they should see. It's beautiful, poignant and it made you cry, but you don't watch it that often, because it's depressing. Season 7 is lighter, but has the same painful qualities.

That didn't bother me in Season 6, because there was a good resolution to all the pain in Seeing Red to Grave. But Season 7 postponed its most painful confrontation until the second-to-last episode, which didn't leave time for the cathartic make-up our characters deserved.

I would react exactly the opposite way. The more painful it is to watch, the better. I am bored when all the characters are happy.

I kind of feel that way, too. And I remember Joss going "Where's Cordelia?!" when his characters got so happy and loving and tight-knit in Season 4. *g*
Joss Whedon: Inevitably everyone has a favourite. People who are really depressing like Season 6 as much as I did.
Hee!

I love painfully sad things often (I am Legend = awesome)....
... but I still hate season 6. I know a lot of people don't see it but I always notice a huge decline in quality watching that season.
