yes, I put Spike and Angel in there because at the time it seemed like they were dead/gone. Am I forgetting anyone? For me, it was Buffy's death. I remember watching "The Gift" and when it was over, I just sat there, tears running down my face. Next would be Joyce, that whole episode really got me.

Wow everyone so far has said buffy(hehe with all of 2 votes). My second pick would have been Angel in Becoming Pt2... I just watched it the other day and it still makes me tear up. The SMG crying face always gets me

Anya.
My favorite character. A character that has been on the show since Season 3, and she just died, with barely any remorse. That's what hit me hard about her death, it wasn't dragged out, there wasn't an episode where the gang delt with her death, there were no final words, there wasn't any depressing music...it just happened in the blink of an eye. Just one soldier down, move on. It was hard to watch my favorite character go out like that.
Lilah's death made me so mad too because I thought she was going to stick around with the gang and maybe reform a little. It was so surprising when Cordy/Jasmine killed her! But then we got that mega-comeback in Home.
Fred's was heartbreaking as well, just seeing such a good hearted person go through that was hard to watch.

You forgot Fred and Wesley.
Of the choices above I chose Anya. It was just so sudden and unexpected and poignant that she died protecting Andrew.
Fred and Wesley's were so sad as well, and are the only two death's in both series that get me all teary eyed (although Buffy, Willow and Giles' reactions to Jenny's death was heartbreaking as well).

Even though the option to vote for her death isn't on the poll list, I'm gonna say Fred's death affected me the most. It was just so unexpected and depressing. Amazing episode with great acting from both Alexis and Amy.

I would have to say Fred. The thing that makes it the most touching is how it came at the worst time for her and Wes. The way that Wes acts the rest of the season is another thing that makes it one of the worst deaths. Every time I watch "A Hole In The World" it brings tears to my eyes, epically when Wes is reading and trying to tell jokes.

Joyce's death was devastating for me. Before "The Body" it was always kinda' comforting to see Buffy pummel whatever killed her friends. That episode took that luxury away and forced Buffy, her friends, and the audience to look at death and mourning in a very raw, realistic manner.
It totally ripped my figurative heart out.
Buffy and Fred come in at a tied second place.

I think Buffy's death in "The Gift" touched me in a way the other deaths did not. Sarah really deserved awards for her performance in that episode. Joss' writing was perfect.
Saying that, the way Tara's death affected Willow really saddened me, not so much when she was on her war path but in "Help" when Willow goes to visit her grave. That would have to be one of the most touching scenes in either series.
Cordelia's and Fred's deaths were equally heartbreaking. It was those episodes that made Angel season five one of the best seasons of any television show.

Anya's death was not expected which is why it hit me the hardest. I had read the spoilers for Tara's death before i saw the episode, so that's why it didnt hit me as hard as Anya's did.

It's difficult to say. I think the only death that genuinely made me cry was Fred's death, it was just heart breaking and Amy sells it amazingly. Buffy's death was also really sad. Wesley's death is also so tragic, though the time of my initial viewing I was so numb by all the prior events that I just sat and gaped at the screen.
On a side note, the lack of mourning/acknowledgement for Anya's demise also always bugged me, particularly Xander's reaction, who practically smiles when Andrew tells him what happened. It's a testament to how much he's hardened and prepares him for his role in season 8, but still... So far there hasn't been a drop of remorse for poor Anya from anyone on the the cast.
[edit]
also while i'm on the topic, what's up with xander and buffy's reaction to tara's death when willow breaks the news in Villians? Seriously? That's always irked me beyond anything. Are they numb at this point or are they just indifferent.

Fred definetly, everything was going so well. It brought me too tears, it was one of the saddest moments for me. Joyce's death was too shocking for me to be sad about if that makes any chance. Tara's death was very sad too.

I chose Tara.
I LOVE Willow and Tara. I don't think it was handled well though.

Out of who was listed I'd say Tara. But if Fred were on there, I would have picked her. Her death really sucked the life out of all of the characters and the way it happened was just way too cruel.

Cordelia's death reveal got me. David's best performance is that phonecall I think. They're all quite effective. Jenny's was the first real major one so I find that powerful too.

Tara for me. That was such a heartwrenching episode. Joyce's death is a close second for me. That episode is really hard for me to watch (it does hit close to home for me). That one I need a huge box of kleenex for.

Joyce's death affected me the most. Because it was the most realistic death. Most of the deaths on both shows are mystical deaths. When Joyce died it was of natural death. It hit me a lot more because you can relate to what Buffy was feeling as so many of us sadly had to go through the same thing.

I think that all the deaths were heartbreaking and all make me cry every time I watch them. Out of the choices though I simply had to go with Joyce's death.
